holograph Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 There were no new GEOCAC recovery reports published on datasheets last month, so I won't be updating the statistics. Quote
AZcachemeister Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Well that sucketh mightily! I put a lot of effort into making the necessary recoveries to make Greenlee and Santa Cruz counties turn red (thus making Arizona the first state to be completely red), and I have been looking forward to reveling in the glory of my accomplishment! Oh, well...I guess there's no point in shooting the messenger... Thanks for keeping us posted, Jim...maybe next month. Quote
kayakbird Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Does anyone happen to have a tabulation of the total number of PID's by County? Excel spreadsheet would be nice, but a text file would work. Thanks, kayakbird Quote
AZcachemeister Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 I could generate one with a few hours' work...sounds like fun! Maybe Jim already has one? Quote
holograph Posted January 5, 2011 Author Posted January 5, 2011 (edited) I could generate one with a few hours' work...sounds like fun! Maybe Jim already has one? See county_counts.csv. It includes a number of destroyed marks, so it may not be exactly what you want. Also, my database is a corrected form of the NGS database, specifically to clean up Alaska boroughs and some cities in Virginia. The NGS datasheet's state/county description sometimes isn't correct and sometimes has missing or obsolete counties. Keep in mind there are thousands of counties, so the complete list is rather large. Edited January 5, 2011 by holograph Quote
kayakbird Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 See county_counts.csv. may not be exactly what you want. Thanks, Holograph, It is close enough - my aim is to play with percentages. I'll have to edit your monthly County counts a bit because of the "white" counties. Also will move some numbers to get a somewhat more accurate count on the Montana Hi-line counties that have a lot (mostly IBC's) listed in the wrong county. kayakbird Quote

There are a lot of marks that are unrecoverable or lost, and urban and developed areas are at a disadvantage because they tend to have a high percentage of unrecoverable marks. I tried that when I first started gathering statistics. It is just as difficult/unfair to compare counties based on percentages as it is to compare by net recoveries, and at least recovery counts are simple to understand and don't require a lot of fudging and judgment. Within a small region with similar history it may be useful. Enjoy the experiment! Quote
+shorbird Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Last month's updates were enough to keep me happy for awhile. Looking forward to the next updates. Quote
+PFF Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 There were no new GEOCAC recovery reports published on datasheets last month, so I won't be updating the statistics. Even with that being the case, our group closed out 2010 just one report shy of 6,400 recoveries, and our total since starting the program is over 54,000. Congratulations to AZcachemeister, shorbird, and kayakbird for finishing the year in the top three slots. Benchmark Blasterz also had a great year, with 764 recovery reports. ALL reports are valuable. So, whether you're among the thirty folks who reported 40 or more, or if you did only a few, thanks for taking time to prepare and upload your reports. With the Power Squadron having moved onto other projects, GEOCAC is the largest (and possibly only) volunteer group actively reporting the condition of benchmarks and updating their descriptions. With the budget crunch at Federal and state levels, I'm confident that reports from government agencies are down--making our services even more valuable than in the past. Thanks to having another year of experience under our belts, plus valuable assistance from the professional surveyors and NGS personnel in the Forum, our reports continue to be high quality. Keep up the great work in 2011! -Paul- Quote

Keep up the great work in 2011! -Paul- It was a fun year, I learned a lot - especially right at the end by meeting GeorgeL from NGS/NOAA. Did NOT get as much work done on NGS>GPXv3 as I had wanted, however. Tried to beat my yearly record of 74 NGS recoveries, but fell short by 9, I *believe*. I have to wait until recoveries are entered in and Holo gets a chance to process. Quote

holograph Posted January 9, 2011 Author Posted January 9, 2011 Holograph, What happened to your Notable Recovery Stations database on your website? Always fun to see those. Kurt Good question. I hadn't noticed. Most likely the hosting service changed some software and broke my code. I'll have to look into it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Quote
holograph Posted January 11, 2011 Author Posted January 11, 2011 The notable recoveries and extreme stations pages have been fixed. Something apparently corrupted the data files for those pages. Quote
+LSUFan Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 (edited) I see where a few (but not all) of my recovery reports from January 1 of this year have been updated on the NGS site. I guess I need to get the rest of them logged. Edited January 19, 2011 by LSUFan Quote
