+gerryh141 Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 I have an Acer laptop and an Acer all-in-one both new with Win7. With regards to the laptop, I have a problem with the Geocache website not finding my handheld eTrek H when I ask to "send to gps". I have no such problem with it finding the Nuvi auto gps. The other PC has no problem with either gps. Could the trouble be that I'm using usb to serial for the eTrek on the laptop...Any ideas?...Thanks. Gerryh141 Quote
+California66er Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 I haven't used an eTrek H, but I used to use my eTrek Venture HC on my Acer, which has Win7. I hate to ask the obvious, but have you downloaded the newest Garmin plug-in? When you plug the Garmin into the laptop, does the laptop itself (aside from Geocaching.com's website) recognize that new hardware has been attached? In other words, does the "AutoPlay" window pop up when you plug it in? Quote

+pppingme Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 This is actually a common question. A lot of the "cheaper" usb-serial cables don't work. There is one particular chipset that works real good, but I can't remember which, but most cables that use that chipset are in the $35-$40 range. I have some notes on it somewhere, I'll dig around and see if I can find them. Quote
+mpilchfamily Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Basically it comes down to drivers. The chip set that works best has Win7/Vista drivers for them while older ones don't. Just look for the converter that has Vista/Win7 support. Quote
+kwcahart Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 I know this is probably over simple, but on one of my GPS receivers you HAVE to turn the power on on the GPSr BEFORE you plug the USB cable into the PC, otherwise it will not recognize the GPS. Quote

Then again, it does not pop up on the All in one PC either but it works on this machine all the same..A poser eh? I have the latest plug-in and Garmin drivers, the mystery is why it works on one and not the other. Another geocacher has suggested a cable may be the problem..Thanks for your input. Quote

I have tried that to no avail..Thanks Quote
