There's something missing

Over the last few days I've noticed an absence in my forum life.

It's bothering me... I feel the need to express my loss...

On the left, underneath our forum avatar, we used to have "Location: SE Wales, UK"

Now we are Locationless... and so is everybody else! :( (And we don't even get an icon for it)

Seriously though, I found it very useful to have that indicator of the poster's location in the world. I'd like it back.

Anyone else miss it?

Yes, I find myself frequently having to click through to a poster's profile, then looking at their finds, to see where they are from. Certainly it would be less load on the site to just show us the info upfront like it used to.

Posted

I didn't know if I had an opinion on this before when I first noticed, but now I'm sure now that I miss it as well. I feel like such a stalker trying to figure out where people live.

Maybe I'll put a topic up about it over in the feedback forum.

Although the basic geocaching game is the same the world over there are aspects of it that are region, or country, specific. Some questions that get posted require a slightly different answer according to whether the poster lives in Alabama, Albania or Alaska.

I feel the need to express my loss...

I added mine.

OK, so I used to know how to do this ...

Can't seem to figure it out now.

How's it done?

The person you're quoting just changed their "forum title" to their location. You know, where mine says "Don't Tase Me Bro"? I better not go there, Groundspeak actually got a complaint about that.

Another new thing: I don't know how many of you actually ignore posters around here, but if you ignore someone now, you don't see their post, period. You used to see their avatar with a blank post that said someting like "You are ignoring posts from Mr. Yuck". But now, you don't even know if they posted. The only time you will even know if they posted is if someone quotes them, or if they were the last poster to a thread, you would see their name before clicking on the thread. But if you read it, there's no post.

This one should not be a big loss.

If you are ignoring posts from Mr. Yuck, why would you want to know whether Mr. Yuck posted or not? :anibad:

Yes. I realise I could do it that way but I don't really want to lose our "Blorenge" quote.

Maybe if I just ask nicely over in the Feedback forum they'll bring back the Locations for the Currently Locationless...

Lol! It won't change. I've changed Miles From Nowhere to Englewood, Florida and it doesn't show up in the forums.

When I look at my profile my forum title reads: Englewood, Florida.

What gives?

Looks like it is a bit quirky. I added a signature two days ago, and it never showed up.

I got tired of trying ... I got better things to do than fighting with that :anicute:

I tried again .... let's see if it shows.

Nope! I will log off and re-log on...

It's supposed to change after you log out/in on this Forum. But that trick seems to not work for some accounts.

I clicked the vote and left a note... didn't seem to change the count even on a revisit... but my note sticks.

It is a very useful item when assisting someone for sure... wish they would require it (area only) when registering.

Okay, Mrs. B,

You've finally convince me to vote for something on that whacked out feed-back forum.

socool.gif... but I know what you mean. I'd like to see more interaction there from the lackeys. Too many topics seem to just drift off into the black hole never to be seen again and you can't tell whether anyone has read them or not. I don't expect a detailed response to each one but just a large red tick with "Noted" and a lackey's name would do. (Just like having your homework assessed at school)

Anyway... I've gone off topic. Thank you for voting, HD.

We have joined in on the vote. It was one of the very useful features of the GC forums. I congratulate you for getting us to finally go vote in that other area.

I always have to poke around a while to find some of these obscure settings. So you're not alone. :P

Go to your Account, and click "Edit" in your Profile. You'll end up here:

http://www.geocaching.com/account/editprofile.aspx

Edit the "Forum Title".

Thanks .. I must have looked over that 50 times while I was trying to figure it out!

Having said that, and changed it, I'm still gonna vote for the old way back

Note that posting a comment does not vote. You have to first click where it says "vote", AND then click whether you want to use 1, 2, or 3 votes. Definitely overly complex.

Thanks... That was the first thing I did... then commented... apparently it takes a few minutes and moving off to register properly on the counter. At least for me... then it was up by three from when I went there 16 to 19.

Overly complex and confusing. I'm pretty sure I voted, as my votes remaining decreased appropriately, but I can't see my supporting comment. Is that a "feature" or did my comment not take?

In other news... where are my PMs hiding? I also can't seem to find the link to manage ignored users and all that other stuff.

I'm not all that sure it will help you... but I started looking for that myself...

All I found accidentally... Up in the right corner of the Forum page is the box where you log in... and after that it shows your avatar, caching name plus sign in/out and Help... just right of that is a counter for PM notifications and a little triangular

bit to list them.... Under that list is a note to view all notifications click on that and you go to the control panel

which when you figure it out has most of the options of the old one... the rest is profile stuff. I suspect that something will still be coming to improve that... Hope it helps... Now I have to go and see what happened to my Signature. It seems to have vanished while editing this morning... I did log off and on again... but maybe the submit failed... but where went the old one?

It is enabled... ah well!

I don't know, I think it's nice that it takes a bit of effort when some jerk wants to insult me because of where I live.

<MrsB goes to look...>

Ottawa? Some people have a problem with people who live in Ottawa?

The world is a mysterious place.

Thanks again to the voters supporting The Return Of The Forum Locations: I am pleasantly surprised that so many of you have ventured across into the somewhat uncharted, and sometimes puzzling, territory of the Feedback forum to vote and comment.

It's not too late to do so if you haven't been there yet...

What next Mrs B?

World domination?
