Ahhh... Preston, I remember him! He was a gold jeep when I got hold of him! A previous logger had given him a paint job (Some farmer from Grantham), so I resprayed him in original colours! Glad to hear he's still going strong and still white, but yeah, discovering him from a magazine picture? That's just silly!

Delete, delete and delete again (if you were the owner) or ignore, ignore and ignore again (easy to do if it's not on your watchlist).

Unlike logging caches you've not visited, I'm not sure there's a hard and fast rule against logging TBs or coins you've personally not seen. If there were I'd not have been given so many lists of peoples' travel items at events... On that basis, the owner may or may not put their foot down.

There was a TB tag and number published at some point in the fairly recent past where hardly anyone logged it. I can't give any more informartion about it, as it wasn't my TB and I don't know if the original intentions are public yet?

Pinned at the top of the Travel Bug forum, posted by the Forum Mod Eartha...

"How to log a travel bug or geocoin"

"...THIS MOST IMPORTANT ONE:

If you log a bogus virtual log on a TB, or offer your own TB up for virtual logging you will risk having that TB page locked forever. This means, if you never saw a bug, but got the bug number and you log it, that bug is in risk of being taken out of the game. Don't do this to TB owners who inadvertently might post a photo, or someone else posts a photo, of their TB number. Don't log it virtually. It's considered abuse of the system. And it's not fair play."

Think I know which one your thinking of Stuey. As far as I know the intentions were never revealed - the experiment rolls on..... I just had a look at it and it's had very few logs despite it's time in the public domain. Shows how few people see what is right in front of them!

Well, it has been parked at your house for two months......... <img src="http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> Did you not notice the photographer? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laughing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laughing.gif" />

It's just parked at mine, pending a cow print paint job, then it will on it's merry way again. BTW, it does not look as if it's previously been painted gold.

edited to add -hmm, I see there are still some teething problems with the forums code!

Well, the Jeep has now been locked by TPTB and Eartha has spent some time zapping all the virtual logs. It seems that the sudden mass stampede of virtual logging did not escape the notice of the frog! Cannot say I am terribly surprised. Perhaps I should spray it gold again and hang it on the Christmas tree

Aint much use as anything other than an ornamant now, but believe me, gold just doesn't look right... How about a chrome finish, you can use it as a glitterball then!

Shame that as it is a white jeep it can't be given a new tracking number and send out again.

I think I know which one you mean - and if so, I was first to log it as a "discover" in the wild!

If not - then there's another that was clearly made available to many folk in the UK and beyond in 2009 that has only had a handful of discoveries.

I've been interviewed twice now on Welsh language TV about Geocaching - A Welsh language magazine type TV programme came to the South Wales Camping Event 2008 to follow me about during the day doing some Geocaching (this is now on YouTube) and another out doors type Welsh language programme came to South Wales Camping Event 2009 ostensibly to do the same thing.

Both showed a TB table - the first one, despite asking them not to, did show about a dozen TB tracking numbers (including a page of the log that was being created on the day of TBs that had been at the event) and a few folk have mentioned that a couple of virtual logs took place as a result. Paradoxically, the only coin whose serial number I really didn't mind being shown (the Oakcoins sample for South Wales Geocacher's Geocoin 2009) got very few discovers compared to other trackables that were only briefly shown in the piece.

Because of this (and the fact I was specifically being interviewed about travel bugs) I was very careful to turn over any exposed tags for the second interview the following year.

Hello UK and Happy Holidays,

That Jeep TB was locked temporarily, so that no more virtual logs would be added, while I cleaned up the TB page. It can be unlocked at a later date when the virtual logging stops, and future virtual logs will be deleted. It's called maintenance, and since Jeep is the owner, I am willing to take on that maintenance. I had to first get a handle on the 563(+/-) virtual logs already posted. I've received a few emails from some of the people that virtually logged it, some saying they understand now, and others who did not understand. Virtual logging is considered abuse of the geocaching.com website, and when it becomes that obvious, it can result in a trackable page being locked. In this case, I just wanted to stop it before any more logs showed up, so I asked Groundspeak to temporarily lock the Jeep. I also requested that someone communicate with the German Magazine publisher to explain the problem. I don't think Google translation does a proper job of translating exactly what I want to say.

I wish you all a safe and Happy Holiday, and that you enjoy the snow you are getting this Christmas season.

I was looking at geocoins on Ebay (other sellers are available..)and saw a nice one there, but with the tracking number clearly visible, I politely emailed the seller, and got the response "yes, I know but its too late to do anything now." I chose not to bid on it in case loads of people discovered it when I activated it.....
