lex3001
I have a cache which is a hollowed out bolt. After several months in the rainy season I have noticed that the cache is getting rusty on the inside. Any advice on how to best keep this cache going as long as possible? I was thikning of oiling it and then drying it (mostly) out again. Or maybe WD-40? Quote Link to comment

+kunarion
oiling it and then drying it (mostly) out again. Or maybe WD-40?You can try that, and just plan to check on it once in a while, to clean off some rust. There's probably not much room, but you could try some kind of liner inside the bolt, to keep the log clean. Maybe a plastic tube, watertight sealed container, or even just a lining of rustproof coating. If it tends to get real wet, and you can't engineer a water seal (as mentioned in the previous post), at least use waterproof paper for the log, and swap it out when necessary. Quote Link to comment
+niraD
It's 20/20 hindsight, but making the container out of a brass bolt (rather than a steel bolt) would keep the container itself from rusting through. And as kpanko suggested, a rubber O-ring would keep water out of the inside of the container. Quote Link to comment
the3gmen
If the hole in the bolt is big enough, you could put a bison tube inside it. Quote Link to comment
+astrowolf67
Clean it out with a wire brush, then use some primer on it. WD40 will clean it, but will not prevent rust as it contains water too. If you just want to clean it and oil it, a light coat of motor oil will work. But, a paper log will soak it up and be hard to write on. David Quote Link to comment

Then coat it with Rust-Oleum. Quote Link to comment

It contains no water. In fact the WD stands for Water Displacement, so it might inhibit rust, but any paper will absorb the WD40 Quote Link to comment
