Cache advice for a metal container

I have a cache which is a hollowed out bolt. After several months in the rainy season I have noticed that the cache is getting rusty on the inside. Any advice on how to best keep this cache going as long as possible? I was thikning of oiling it and then drying it (mostly) out again. Or maybe WD-40?

You can try that, and just plan to check on it once in a while, to clean off some rust. There's probably not much room, but you could try some kind of liner inside the bolt, to keep the log clean. Maybe a plastic tube, watertight sealed container, or even just a lining of rustproof coating.

If it tends to get real wet, and you can't engineer a water seal (as mentioned in the previous post), at least use waterproof paper for the log, and swap it out when necessary.

Apply Naval jelly as per instructions, then clean it with a bottle brush (that you don't want to ever use again). Then coat it with Rust-Oleum.

Clean it out with a wire brush, then use some primer on it. WD40 will clean it, but will not prevent rust as it contains water too. If you just want to clean it and oil it, a light coat of motor oil will work. But, a paper log will soak it up and be hard to write on.

I think you are mistaken about WD40. It contains no water. In fact the WD stands for Water Displacement, so it might inhibit rust, but any paper will absorb the WD40
