+zionzr2 Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Its Definitely NOT a USGS or NGS mark. Here is the Location: N 30° 15.277 W 097° 44.863 On the Curb. Thought I would wait a bit before posting the picture of it and let anyone who wants to seek it out themselves first. Good Luck! Quote
+Trucker Lee Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 I don't know if it is coincidental or related, but I find it curious that right near that location Google Earth showed a business called "The Benchmark Company". I thought at first they might even have placed that out there as a business display or draw, but their website indicates they are a market research firm ( http://www.thebenchmarkcompany.net/ ) Quote

I noticed no such business as I was walking by. But I was busy looking down for marks. The mark profile is barley visible with the Google street-view next door and to the south of that indicated business. I only saw it on street-view b/c I know what and where to look. I also submitted a page for it on the waymaking site. I'm still very much a noob to all this. Only had my GPS for a week. Learning the ropes as fast as I can. Quote
+HotRod205 Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 The City of Birmingham Engineering Dept. places benchmarks in curbs here, and none are listing in the GC or NGS database. Sounds like a city or county mark. Here is a City of Birmingham curb mark that I listed as a waymark... http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WM996W_..._Benchmark_H_12 Quote

Trying to get it approved at Waymarking.com it was rejected at first but I resubmitted and still waiting. Quote
+zionzr2 Posted December 13, 2010 Author Posted December 13, 2010 Since I don't live anywhere near Texas, I probably won't be searching for it anytime soon, would you mind posting the picture? Seeing how I don't seem to know or able to find enough information about this mark to post this on the Waymarking site, Here is the Pic: Quote
+HotRod205 Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 That's a cool looking benchmark! It kinda looks like a manhole cover, only smaller of course. Nice one! Definitely better than the generic ones here. I bet you will find many more in Austin if you look for them. I suggest major intersections, especially downtown. Quote
+Trucker Lee Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Cool looking marker. Definitely city. Quote
+billwallace Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 Here is a little info: Monument, Type A Survey Identification Marker Item No. 725S Survey Markers Looks like they are used for capital improvement projects - maybe there are more around Capital Improvement Program Project List - managed by the Public Works Department They might have data sheets... mloser Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 They have a map of survey markers. If you are interested in recovering them you might want to contact their GIS or engineering department and see if they have any interest. I recently completed the recovery of 240 markers in a nearby county with the blessing of their GIS department. I didn't find any online datasheets, but then again I didn't give it my best effort. +HotRod205 Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 This is getting too interesting. I have found two county GIS disks here by dumb luck, I know there are plenty more out there. I really didn't think there would be online info but now I'm going to have to spend a night searching and maybe contact the county, and possibly the city as well. Quote

+zionzr2 Posted December 19, 2010 Author Posted December 19, 2010 I was out collecting NGS Benchmarks today and to my surprise I stumble across another City of Austin Survey Marker like I found before. This one at N 30* 15.851' W 097* 45.422' Quote
