+highplainsdrifters Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 I was wondering about a bench mark that I stumbled across the other day. It's at our local courthouse set in the brick in the wall? (I've been by there a million times and just happened to get a cell call, so I was standing there staring at the wall.) I can't find it anywhere on the USGS topo maps I have of the area, and it's not listed in here either. I did find one that was supposed to be located on an aluminum water tower (in the listings) but that tower isn't there anymore. Is it possible that they moved the marker to a new spot? But then also, I actually surveyed on a seismograph crew for a long time and I've never heard of one that wasn't set in/on the ground. Got me puzzled! John Quote
AZcachemeister Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 It is certainly highly possible that there could be a C & GS mark placed on your courthouse that isn't in the NGS database, or the Geocaching.com database. As for your water tower, these are usually 'intersection stations'. Prominent elevated structures that would be sighted on from other known locations and their (relatively) precise locations could be derived mathematically. Not surprising that the tower has been removed. You can log it on Geocaching.com, but the NGS isn't interested in intersection stations these days. Quote
