+nadaj Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Wow! Lovely coins! Would definately be interested in one of each!! Or even just one! But as the other half is an avid geocoin collector, and is welsh, this is a MUST!! Quote
+Eclectic Penguin Posted January 8, 2011 Author Posted January 8, 2011 Just to let folks know that these coins are now available for purchase! As mentioned previously, they cost £12.50 and are being sold to raise money to host the United Kingdom's fourth mega event - Mega Wales 2011 which is being held in the City of Swansea, in the principality of Wales on July 31st 2011. We have a new online shop to sell these and other Mega Wales merchandise and can be found at: http://www.megawales.co.uk/shop As this shop is new, we're experiencing some teething problems - the coin purchase section should now be free of problems but other products may currently be listed as "sold out" while we sort out a minor problem with our postage charging. Specifically, the supporter's packs should be available for sale at some point this weekend. Quote

+Dorsetgal & GeoDog Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 I've purchased some, really looking forward to seeing these special coins. Quote
+Ladybug Kids Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 I received my Welsh slate geocoins in Alaska and am very pleased with how they turned out. I really appreciate locally made geobling!!! Thanks for your efforts. Quote
+Jackalgirl Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Just got mine. They're awesome, and Summer is deeply impressed by the fact that they're made out of slate. : ) Quote
delta123 Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Coins arrived safely in the Netherlands. Real beauty's!! Quote
+gardengorilla Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 I received mine today. They are quite nice! Quote
+Eclectic Penguin Posted January 27, 2011 Author Posted January 27, 2011 Thanks to all who have posted today - I also think they are lovely too! Although the shop currently lists them as sold out - we have a new batch on rapid re-order - hopefully within a week! We've also had a couple of people point out/complain that the coin they got had "flaws" - differences in the text's brightness, differences in brightness across the disc of the coin... Please undestand that this is a natural rock being laser etched and this happens - you get an absolutely unique Geocoin, flaws and all. http://www.megawales.co.uk/shop/ Quote
+Tennessee Jed Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 I received mine around a week ago and they are very nice! They will always stay in my collection and will never be traded. Quote

+Eclectic Penguin Posted January 28, 2011 Author Posted January 28, 2011 Will supporter packs be available to those who cannot attend but would like to help out? Its my understanding that Supporter's Packs are mainly designed to be collected on the day of the event - however we also understand that some wish to provide support (and indeed buy the exclusive Geocoin that's part of the pack), who for whatever reason won't be able to make it to the event itself. I understand that in these cases, for a small postage fee, we can post these out - but this will only occur after the event since the supporter's packs (and the Mega Wales Geocoin) are being made available for the first time at the event. Since there's a Geocoin involved, I'll probably start a separate thread with regards to this. Quote

I have to add... we do QA all the coins that are etched - and a number have had to be discarded because sometimes a flaw/impurity has caused the etching process to malfunction. Thankfully we don't lose the tracking number and a new coin is etched with the same number. The entire process is conducted by hand on a coin by coin basis and we are soon going to be putting a video, made by the manufacturer on our web site that illustrates the process from cutting the slate after it arrives, to the laser etching process (which is awesome to watch!) A couple of this batch of coins also had some sizeable golden flecks of iron pirities (fool's gold) in them. Quote

Your project provided me with the inspiration to look into Alaskan jade trackables. Quote
+Eclectic Penguin Posted February 4, 2011 Author Posted February 4, 2011 A brief headsup to those waiting for the second batch to become available (and I know there are some disappointed at missing out on the first)... I have the second batch of slate coins in my possession this evening! They're going to be made available for sale at a local event here in Wales tomorrow afternoon and the remainder will be made available on our online shop very soon after. They are the same designs as previously - Prince of Wales Feathers and Celtic. I'll post here again when they actually go on the shop - but I may this time also give a head start to folk in the UK on our own forum as I took a bit of flack last time for not doing so (but this was because they'd pretty much sold themselves out already due to email requests to this part of the forum). A quick question... I've kept this option quiet up until now... but with conventional coins, as well as changing the pattern, you also have the option of different metals. We DO have an alternative rock to work with - Identilase Ltd specialise in producing custom slate ... and granite etched items. So my question is this - Welsh granite coins with the same designs - or perhaps some new designs? Granite I realise isn't quite so synonymous with Wales - but apparently the designs have slightly better contrast due to the higher power required for the laser to etch them (though I also understand you also lose some definition). And to answer one final question that several have asked - yes, our slate coins come from Ffestiniog in North Wales - the world's best source for slate! Quote
+Monaghanman Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 By the way: The slate coins are on the Mega Wales site again. Quote
+batsgonemad and his squirrel Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 By the way: The slate coins are on the Mega Wales site again. Sweet thanks for that, my two coins are ordered. Quote
+Eclectic Penguin Posted February 6, 2011 Author Posted February 6, 2011 (edited) SOSPAN FACH! I hadn't realised they'd already been put on the shop! The original two varieties are available once again. Edited February 6, 2011 by Eclectic Penguin Quote

+redwingrr Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Got my coin today (fast!) and it's great! I'm wondering if oiling the coin might bring out the color? Mineral oil brings out the color of wood so nicely. Or is that a bad idea with slate? Does anyone have any info? Thanks. Quote

Hmm was wondering about that myself, the slate looks really raw in its natural form, would be nice if one was able to possibly polish it up without damaging the engraving. Perhaps the folk who cut the slate might know Quote
+batsgonemad and his squirrel Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 i found this but have no idea what the results might be http://www.fluesystems.com/sundries/info/hotspot_slate_oil.htm Quote
+Eclectic Penguin Posted February 21, 2011 Author Posted February 21, 2011 These coins have been pre-treated and any further application may indeed damage the coins. The original intention for some of the products made using this process was to be used out doors as house signs - and I'm told they've most definitely been treated. More have recently arrived on our online shop. Quote
+Eclectic Penguin Posted April 3, 2011 Author Posted April 3, 2011 A very big thank you to all who invested in these Geocoins - my original estimate of 50 was WAY off the mark and they're still selling well! The company who made these Geocoins for us are putting together a short video about their production. Missing are images/video for stages 3 & 5 (both would be of the coin being painted with some form of treatment), the "interesting" bits are now complete and available for . Quote
+cimawr Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 I just ordered two with the celtic design... yeah, it's a tad "generic", but the feathers are associated with the Prince of Wales, who is not - and never has been - Welsh. (And for those who aren't aware... "Ich dien" is GERMAN, not Cymraeg. ) Quote

(And for those who aren't aware...
