+E-people Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Okay, while we are hiking or walking around we find benchmarks. We take pictures of them because most of the time we have cameras not our GPS. Is there anyway for me to use the picture I took to identify the benchmark so i can log the find? I have tried using the search feature but can't seem to locate the benchmark. Quote
AZcachemeister Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 There are A LOT of survey marker discs out there that are not included in the NGS database, nor in the Geocaching.com database. Reading the FAQ on the main 'Find a Benchmark page at Geocaching.com will answer many questions. If you know the general area you were in when you saw the mark, you can use This benchmark viewer to help pinpoint the mark. Also, there is a very nice tool available for Google Earth to help locate marks that way. I don't have a link handy, but someone will be along shortly to provide one... Quote
Okie'sKid Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 Load DSWORLD from this link If you have GE loaded, you can use the DSWORLD add-in to look at BMs. Happy hunting!! Quote
+billwallace Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 The Google Earth tool is here. The download link is at the end of the line that says "Download the KMX file". Look at the pictures you took and see what was stamped on the disk you found. Use either of these tools/viewers to find marks in the vicinity of the mark you found then compare its information with what is stamped on the disk. gl Quote
Wintertime Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 I have tried using the search feature but can't seem to locate the benchmark. As "AZcachemeister" said, a lot of benchmarks aren't in the NGS database and therefore aren't on Gc.com. However, are you sure you tried the full benchmark search on this page? http://www.geocaching.com/mark/nearest.aspx You can enter the designation and the state and search on those parameters. For example, there's a survey mark in Yosemite that's stamped "30 B", so if I enter "30 B" and "CA", I get a page with about half a dozen results, including that mark. (Watch out: spacing counts! "30B" won't work in that example.) Patty Quote
