'Man over-board'

Hi all, I hqve this feature on my unit, I was wondering-I read all the time that its a very good idea to mark the location of your car/motorcycle/pony while tramping this wonderful land,

would the MO feature be a good use for this, and also how many times can you mark a MO ?, can you mark multiple MO's ?

We have the MO on our Oregon 550t, having said that, we wouldn't use if for finding the car. If we needed to we would use the mark a waypoint feature instead.

I guess Man Overboard is just a fast way of marking a waypoint lol! T'would be careless to lose more than one over the side tho..

Always hit the MO button when we leave the car, as stated it is just an instant way of marking a specific waypoint. You will have to opt to stop navigationas it automatically starts to navigate back to that spot.

We then clear it once we are back at the car.

The function of MOB is to create a waypoint and immediately start navigating back to that point. To that end it isn't really optimum for marking your car. Usually there is a quick way to mark the location you are currently at. Most of the time it is faster to just mark a waypoint than to find the MOB function of the GPS.

 

Depending on what unit you have, many GPS units can reposition a waypoint. I have several waypoints set up such as National Car that when I get to a new rental location I edit the waypoint using the reposition here function. I find it is quicker and I can create a more descriptive name when I am not in a rush.

Its a feature obviously for use on nautical GPS. We have this feature on both of our dive club boats. Its great for hitting in an emergency situation such as MO, when you can just return immediately to that position. Its also good for hitting in other situations where you may later need to relay that position to the coastguard or other agency.

Where do you find the MO button on a 550t? I always use ‘Mark Waypoint’, and name it car, or clear the ‘Tracks’, so that you can see where you started from.

When you touch the forward arrows you will get to it in the menu. It is a yellow and red flag and says Man Overboard. Not sure whether the PC brigade would like it, I bet they would prefer it to say person overboard!

laid out in that order, this allows me to do what I want when out caching.

Thanks for all the replies peeps, just wondered 'as its there' could there be a practical way to use it, thanks too Dr Dick&Vic, it is indeed a quick way to mark a position

Please don't laugh, but I have never dared press that button, and I made sure the kids knew not to aswell, as I thought I would alert the emergency services!

After a recent (I can't remember which) software update, Garmins which have the Geocaching profile selected would not display the Man Overboard (and a couple of other) menu icons - at least, they don't on the Oregon 550t and Dakota 20 I have. The fix is to go to Setup > Main Menu. Scroll to the last page and you will see the menu icons there, greyed out. Select each in turn, and put it in a different place, and they then become - and will remain - activated, as will the replaced menu items.
