Inappropriate travel bug???

What exactly is inappropriate about it?

I've seen worse at the zoo, and they call that natural.

Yes you have a naked monkey. But his hand doesn't seem to be attached to his anotomicaly correct appendage. So far as I can tell he's just naked.

Ever seen a PG-13 movie? "non sexual" nudity is allowed. I recon they think 13 year olds have seen it before. If they have been to the zoo they have seen more than that.

Still in the end it's geocaching.com's decision.

I found it highly offensive and totally inappropriate. Any idea where I can buy one of those?

Seriously though, although amusing, hopefully parents planning on doing a cache one of these is in will check the photo before taking the kids to it.

There is a difference between a 'natural' monkey at the zoo, and a cartoon stuffed monkey that's a (ahem) Long way from being anatomically 'correct'.

Yeah, the cartoon stuffed money doesn't fling crap at the zoo patrons just to watch them run away. Or any of a number of other things monkees do to amuse themselves. Hmmm... I sence a correlation between a zoo monkee and the owner of the travel bug. Clearly both were amusing themselves.

I didn't vote. I don't find it offensive, but it could be a little concerning for some unexpecting parents. I guess I hope that anyone who finds it unexpectedly can advert their children's attention if they don't want them to see it.

I will say that if I find one of these, I'll probably put some clothes on it!

Yea, it's probably inappropriate for a "family game," but there's no way something like this CAN be banned, since there's no approval process for travel bugs. Even if TBTB deleted the record for this bug, it would still be floating around out there, going from cache to cache.

Sheesh! I just hope my 4-year-old and 6-year-old don't find it. I'm really not ready to have that particular conversation with them right now. icon_redface.gif

i think the question is not "should it be allowed"? (it's not) but "how would it be recalled?" webling's point about its physical presence is right.

i do find it inappropriate, but my opinion isn't really important. TPTB have already come down strongly against sexual or alcohol-related material in caches.

outside of deleting the logs, though, i don't think there's much that can be done

Keep in mind what the geocaching.com FAQ says:

What shouldn't be in a cache?

Use your common sense in most cases. Explosives, ammo, knives, drugs, and alcohol shouldn't be placed in a cache. Respect the local laws. All ages of people hide and seek caches, so use some thought before placing an item into a cache.

and as for anatomically correct, there is no species on this planet that had genitalia that large in proportion to its total body size.

first, it's unnecessary. second, the amount of blood required to make the hydraulics function would be prohibitive.

I think it's funny as hell. If I were to find said TB, I'd probably log it, taking great care to avoid that protuberance. While geocaching is fun for kids, it is not specifically for kids. Children hear and see far worse in daily life than an 'enhanced' monkey.

Based on some of the other rulings by moderators in the UK I would think this set of TBs although is inventive and amusing to most adults it is inappropriate content for children. It could probably be explained away by parents but that is not the point. The problem is if this is allowed then do the boundaries of acceptibilty move with it?

Thanks

From a purely scientific standpoint, the Bonobo chimp, or Pan paniscus, has the largest genetalia to total-body-size ratio for any mammal.

But yeah, this is definately anatomically incorrect. I wouldn't reccomend using something like this as a travel bug.

It goes beyond being a naked monkey.

If someone finds this with his or her children & they ask what it is, you can say it is the monkey’s penis.

However, kids don’t just have one question…

When they ask why would someone put a naked monkey in a cache? You could say for humor probably.

Then they might ask Why is showing his penis funny?

What would you say to that?

I think your answer to the second question might be a little off. Why not say, "Monkeys in the wild don't wear clothes, so I guess neither does this one."

Might they also interpret it as it's tail, being the innocent children that most kids are? Questions become moot at that point.

Getting back to the original question, I have to agree with others, that it's not really appropriate for something like that to be in a cache, and if accepted by the bulk of cachers, then we have no one to blame but ourselves when someone else tries to push the envelope further.

So I'm assuming your kids are both girls and have never seen you come out of the shower?

The question wouldn't be, "What is it?" The questions would be more along the lines of, "Why does IT look like THAT?" and "Why doesn't MY stuffed monkey have one of THOSE?", and so forth.

Questions I'd rather wait until they're just a little older to get into...

First of all, the monkey offends me, and I've worked in bars half of my life, and I've seen rude things.

Secondly, encouraging heavy drinking is not a good idea, because I've worked in bars half of my life, and I've seen rude things.

Shock the monkey, not vice versa.

Being a daddy cacher with kids, I also think it's pretty un-cool. And you'd be a fool to call me prudish. You don't even know me. However, to force me to engage my son in the inevitable genitalia conversation is a rather unfair thing to do. That is the beauty of being a parent, you still have certain freedoms to raise the kind of little boy or girl you choose, at least for a while.Until you run across people who leave this kind of crap in family oreinted, public places like geocaches.

I don't suppose the bug owner still has the option of doing the right thing, do they?

These types of things should not be allowed in gouaches. I think that it will be shocking to some people and children should not be subjected to it. Children just need to be children. I think that nudity is natural, but does not have a place in a geocache. I would not have had a problem something artfully done, but this is pornography. I do however question what I leave in caches. I make sure books are okay for kids even if they are adult books. I also had a set of cards and removed all of the ones that might be considered offensive even though I would consider them art.

It's funny because some people get so uptight around the subject of nudity.

You are kidding, right GPSaxophone? Just because you may cache in the company of other adults does not make this game exclusive to adults. And like I said, forcing me to ingage my child in a conversation about genetalia at a time I do not choose is wrong. And offensive. And presumptious. You have your set of morals, and decide how you would raise a child. I have mine. The idea that a person would encroach something I would deem unsuitable into my boys world could be very dangerous indeed......

If someone comes across this monkey, they can put a diaper or a pair of shorts on it. Do not take out of circulation. Remember that you are not appointed the

I would hope people would use their common sense and consider that families with young children go caching and this might be unappropriate for young children. However, if you wanted to not offend anybody there would be very little one could put in a cache. In my very first cache, I found a keychain that portrayed an unflattering ethnic stereotype. I traded for this item and mentioned in my log that I found it inappropriate. After reading in the forums about some of the things people find offensive in caches, I decided that I over reacted. I now accept that one of the risks of geocaching is finding things in caches that might be offensive. Just like channel surfing on TV, or surfing the internet. It is part of the world we live in for better or worse.

Each of us has the power to censor. The fact that so many of us have responed to this, gives the person what they wanted, controversy. I can think of many items that are offensive. Should I come across a TB, or just a cache trinket, that crosses my defintion of offensive, I can just remove it from the cache. If it is a TB I would contact to owner and offer to mail it back to them. (At least the tag anyway) joesbar.

Whereas I agree that this TB is ofensive to many, I think we should also notice that the TB is overseas.

People of different cultures have different mores, especially regarding nudity. You need only to subscribe to National Geographic to see the obvious differences in these cultures.

As people are fond of telling me:

Who are we to impose our views on others- especially people of other cultures?

So far it looks like there is only one poster (Lassitude) in this thread that has any likelihood of coming across this TB (soon at any rate).

I am quite sure it will go MIA immediately if it crosses into the United States- mores are different here and the great majority view nudity as 'naughty', whether real or stylized.

Why are we, with thousands of miles of ocean betwen us and it, so concerned about it?

Caint never did nothing.
