+Student Camper Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 (edited) I have logged a benchmark (UV5586) and it went well until I tried to upload a second photo, Is there something I'm missing? perhaps I'm only allowed one picture or there is a problem in the system somewhere. There have been issues @ Groundspeak today and I waited several hours to try again but still got an error page. Any ideas? EDIT, I just noticed this is being dicussed in another forum, Moderator may choose to merge. Edited November 15, 2010 by student camper Quote
+NorthWes Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 Neat find, student camper! There's hundreds like this along Alaska's coast waiting to be recovered. You are able to add additional photos to the log; go to your current log (visit the listing and then click on your log - then select 'upload picture'). Get those area photos on the page too with marks like this, for several reason - first of course is to help validate the bolt against the area, but as important as that may be there's a whole bunch of us out here watching the benchmark gallery page for photos of the 'eye candy' settings that some marks are found in - and an Alaskan coastal mark in Ketchikan's coastal waters can't not be 'eye candy'! I just tried to upload another photo and it failed again with the the same error message. I think there are others having the same issues. I have another find to log but not until these issues are resolved. Quote

I just uploaded pictures for 7 different marks and did not have any problems at all. I re-sized all my pictures before doing any logging. None of the picture were larger than 800 X 600 pixels and all were under 200K in size. They all uploaded fairly quickly at this size. John Quote

Thanks for the help. Quote

Papa-Bear-NYC Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 This may be a dumb question but how do you resize your pictures? I have not been able to download any for a while now. Janine You use a photo editor. Mine allows you to set 2 things: 1) the width and height in pixels and 2) the level of compaction for .jpg files (which affects file size) when you save it. So what I do is first resize it's width and height (I usually use 960 x 720 pixels) and then reduce the file size (by changing the .jpg level) to under 150 kb. That works. I use Thumbs Plus, a freeware product, but I would think just about any photo editor would be able to do the same sort of thing. BTW: I think the software here allows any picture 600 pixels in width (or less) to be uploaded, or pictures of any width, but file size less that 150 kb to be uploaded. Rg Quote

John This may be a dumb question but how do you resize your pictures? I have not been able to download any for a while now. Janine We use Adobe Photoshop Elements (1). It allows us to 'enhance' the picture color tone, contrast, brightness, etc. It came free with the first digital camera that we bought way back when. If all you wish to do is to resize a picture Easy Thumbnails will let you do that (it's free). If you wish to do photo editing Gimp Photo Editing software will allow you to do a wide range of adjustments to your pictures. It too is FREE. It does take some practice to get comfortable using it, but the basics are learned pretty easily and you can have fun "adjusting" and modifying and learning. The picture size we use varies, normally it is either 800 X 600 pixels or 900 X 675 pixels and under 200kb size with most being 125kb to 150kb. If the picture detail requires it we will adjust it to just under the 200kb mark (not over 195kb) to help bring out some details. John Quote

I always crop and resize my photos to maximum 600 pixels (longest dimension), and so the uploaded picture is < 125k per these guidelines on each photo upload page — Some Tips * If your original image is under 125k or 600 pixels wide, the largest image will not be resized. * It doesn't do the best resizing job. It is preferable to edit your own larger image. I second the GIMP. It's a great open-source program. Though it has most of the same functionality of Photoshop, it works quite differently, so there is a learning curve, but that comes with power most of the time. -ArtMan- Quote
