kjjones Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 We have a great multi-stage cache near me that is owned by someone with a non-verified e-mail that has not logged in for 3+ years. The last stage is very deteriorated, leaky, a different container as described in the cache listing, ruined log book, and needs maintenance badly. I would be glad to take over (adopt?) this cache, but there seems to be no way to do that given that I cant contact the owner. So, is it ok just to refurb the cache? I still couldn't verify finds or do any maintenance to the web info but at least it would be usable. Oh, there is one other nice local multi-stage by this same person with a leaky ammo box at the end that could use some attention. Thanks, KJ Quote
jholly Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 You could do maintenance. But why not file a needs archive and when it gets archived put your own cache in place? Quote
+John in Valley Forge Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 If it is just minor maintenance, go ahead. If it is major, you may be better to NA it and rebuild it, but slighty differently. One advantage to rebuilding it would be to get all those FTF hounds and local cachers to come back to the area again. Quote
+d+n.s Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 I say NM it wait and if nothing happens NA it. Go ahead and make a new cache in its place that is a "tribute" to the old one if its really great or maybe do something new with it and make it even better. Quote

That way, you can make it the cache that you want, and you're not catering to somebody elses laziness. Quote

GOF and Bacall Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 I vote for archiving it and hiding your own. Caches don't need to live forever. By archiving and starting over you give everyone that has found the cache the chance to revisit the area. Quote
sp1tf1re Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 I am with everyone here, that you should just put a note in for archiving and then rebuild your own. Maybe put in a needs maintenance log and see if the owner comes out to fix it. Quote
+gworol Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 I’m taking care of Keystone Arches (GC6C8A) pretty much rebuilt it. I’d like to adopt it so I can edit it. What I have done is make a bookmark list for it, I can give info for the cache there. Quote
+Chokecherry Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 One problem I have with the foster caches (not adopted but being cared for by others) is coordinates and description issues. If the coordinates change because the foster cacher had to move something it only gets put in the logs. Then I come around read through the description glance through the logs and just load it into my GPS. Now I don't have the right coordinates. Or I'll read through see the container type I'm looking for only to find out that someone replaced it with a new container of a different type, sometimes a different size etc. Well the foster person can't adjust the cache description to reflect where it is. Maybe it's not under a rock anymore but in a stump... Personally for abandoned caches that need a lot of love I'm a believer in archiving them since the foster cacher can't properly maintain the cache and the cache page. Quote
