Water Cache Hides

We where just wandering if there was anyway to seperate water caches from Traditional caches. Like how there is the Ghost cache and Mystery cache. It could be called a Float Cache, or Water Logging Cache, gotta somehow float your way out to it. This way when people with no kind of floatation device can avoid going to a cahe an did not read the description or see the rating. Also think it could help when searching on map to eliminate water caches from smiley map...just thought we should bring it up...What does everyone else think?.....a smiley with a snorkel??

the Ghost cache and Mystery cache.

I assume you are talking about Virtuals when you say Ghost. Those are left over from before the purge and are no longer allowed on the GC website. So you can't really quote that as an example since then.

Water caches are best handled with an attribute.

OK We understand water caches = 5 and You can search by attribute. But when you look at the geo cacheing map and you see a bunch of traditional caches near a lake or say a park area wit a big lake. Lets say you do not have a boat or kayak. you go out to find all the Land base Traditional Caches come home log all your finds and see that there are still some Traditional caches that You did not get because you cant get them. That Unfound Traditional cache will always be on the map.. but if there was a different Icon for Water Caches, Like some of the Other Caches Virtual, Multi, Mystery, and the others. All you have to do is pick an chose which ones you want to look for on the Geo Cache Map..

Not all water caches are 5's. But they generally have a higher D/T rating.

The problem with your request for a special icon is that it is a slippery slope.

I feel your pain, I live near a river and am surrounded by unfound caches.

I blame my wife. She just doesn't understand that I need to buy a boat so I can find these things and get the smilies on my map.

There are many different genres of caches: water caches, cemetery caches, night caches, special tools needed caches, and so forth. The breakdown could be endless. In addition, these genres are not mutually exclusive and as certainly not exclusive with the current cache types: traditional, multi cache, mystery. Instead attributes are used to represent cache genres and each cache can have more then one attribute set. Premium members can use Pocket Queries to select caches with specific attributes. Non-premium members can use the attributes to determine if a cache is a particular genre and whether or not special equipment is needed.

Perhaps a future enhancement could show the attributes when you mouse over the cache on a map or in a pop up when you click on the map.

No need for a seperate classification of type. If we start classifying for every type there would be a million icons. I don't have a boat and live in a region with 3 rivers, a huge lake, and a couple smaller lakes nearby. Those caches will be on the map for awhile. If I would like them to not be on my map there is a handy Premium member benefit called the Ignore List. Once there they disappear from my map. If I ever get a boat I can take them off the ignore list.

Did not have know about this ignore list..? .. What about people that do not have premium membership? And we are just Classifying a Land Based Cache and Water Based Cache.

yes we know about the attributes. Just trying to Classify a Land Based Cache and Water Based Cache. I am only talking about on the Geocache map. And if you do not have premium membership.

Your question has been answered several times. Nobody seems to think it's a good idea. There's no reason for it. If you don't like having the traditional icons on the map when you look at it, ignore them. If you want to know what kind of cache you're looking for before you go hunting, read the description. All the information is right there and very easy to access if you take 30 seconds and look at the cache page.

Why don't you explain what you are trying to solve first instead of coming up with a suggestion that most think is unworkable. Somebody brought up the ignore list and you seemed to be intererested in that.

Is is that you want to hide the water caches from the map when you look at it?

Only premium member can hide caches by cache type from the map at the present time - so we can assume that a solution for premium member is sufficient. One solution is to create a PQ that excludes certain caches based on attributes. Then you can preview the PQ in a map by clicking the map_magnify.png button on the pocket query page.

I can usually tell if a geocache is in the water by looking at the map.

I think the OP would like "boat required" caches to be their own type and have their own icon so they quickly identify it as needing a boat.

If this is the case, that could cause some problems because needing a boat is an "extra" thing and not an actual cache type. A water-based cache could still be a puzzle or a multi, which would cause some confusion with the icons. Would it get the puzzle icon or the water-based icon?

What I can't tell is a cache near a body of water that is only accessible by boat. Land access may be impossible because of terrain or because of no trespassing on private property.

I love water caches and hope to place a few next summer.

I am in the group that believes these caches are best left as trads or multi or puzzle etc and we indicate "water cache" someway in the attributes

I believe our system is adequate. I look at the cache page before going out to get a feel for what I'm getting into. There's one I discovered late in the season that I see a few people boat out to here and there but it's not that far of a swim and I will likely swim to it when it gets warmer. Once I swim to the island it will quickly become a land based cache again.

I've waded across rivers and through little waterfalls this year to get to caches... technically those would be waterbased too I suppose...

It's too generic to go for water and land based caches. Since many caches have the best of both worlds involved and not all water based caches require special equipment.

It's quite simple to look at a map, attributes, description and ratings and pick out caches based on that. Worked for me as a basic member and continues to work well as a premium member.

And it's important to remember that in large parts of the world what is a 'water based cache' is only so for part of the year. The rest of the year we can walk on the ice to get to the caches.

I have a couple here that I want to snag this winter because the lake they're on is known to be too rough most of the time for my little kayak.

Where do I find this Ignore List?

Then read the cache description and previous logs, and look at the terrain rating and attributes.;):)

There's a point where you just can't expect Geocaching.com to do all the work for you.

In other news, reading is hard. Let's go shopping!
