Geocaching.com site update Nov 9th 2010

Recommended Posts

You are correct. It has been a long day and I allowed myself to forget that I am no longer just a cacher posting thoughts in a forum, but a representative of Groundspeak. I didn't mean to come off as harsh as I did but that's no excuse, and I apologize to t4e for my comments.

It seems that the problem with excessive line breaks/paragraphs on cache pages has been solved. (Pages posted to this topic look fine right now.)

The problem remains on trackable page:

http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=835551

That page was fine before the update. I have not touched it since that.

Also:

21214: Text Change: All instances of Home Coordinates to Home Location

Updated the site with the term Home Location instead of Home Coordinates

Appears OK under "search options" on my profile, but I still have "SW 17.4km from your home coordinates" on cache pages and logs. This applies to all languages (they all show the English text).

t4e, the spacing in your logs should be back to normal now!

the extra spacing it is indeed gone now

i edited my log to verify that and i noticed the "last edited by..." it is in the post and can be deleted and

i realize that it would add the new "last edited by..." with the current time stamp, but i'm not sure if its supposed to be that way

Moun10Bike's comments were completely unacceptable and frankly I think he owes that cacher a public apology.

It has been mentioned before but I am receiving Watchlist messages of published caches with a subject of (Not Published).

Example:

Location: Overijssel, Netherlands

freijn found Nostalgia (Not Published) (Unknown Cache) at 11/10/2010

Visit Unknown Cache

Nostalgia

This is an old cache (published before the update). I have also received reviewer notes with final coords (hope that does not happen again)...

Please fix this.

A note about HTML comments in cache descriptions: Allowing this is a security risk. We have returned the ability to add comments to the page for now, but at some point in the future it will have to be removed again. If you use this tactic on your puzzle caches please make other provisions. I know this sucks. I'm sorry.

We use this tactic on one or more of our caches

When this occurs I will be archiving them...

Hi GC-team,

I have only ONE question: Why don´t you first try a server update on a seperate system or page before you upload this update onto the main server? Wouldn´t it be great to have some users to check out the new update on a seperate site for a few days? In my view the whole community is used to eradicate the failures that these updates are producing. I cannot understand this at all!!!:rolleyes:;)

Every time you released an update I had to change the listings to let it look like before.

I basically had the same question in a thread in the geocahing topics forum.

With the bug that introduced yesterday with the hot fix (I assume) with souvenirs, and some of the issues that have arisen regarding maps, lost formatting in the logs, stripping out html comments (which has probably broken more than a few puzzle caches) the idea of setting up a separate test server (either running on a separate port or on a different server) has a lot of merit. It could be done such that a subset of the user and geocache database was used (I do this all the time for unit testing of code I develop). I'm sure that if GS asked for volunteers to be beta testers of new monthly releases you'd get a lot of interest. It might even be done using Amazon S3 or some other virtual server environment that could be brought up for a few days prior to the production release to let beta testers kick the tires, then the virtual server shut down after the release is deployed to the masses. We're using Amazon S3 where I work and it's worked out pretty well.

I posted the idea on the feedback site: :)

try a server update on a seperate system or page before you upload this update onto the main server

Does this mean that my links for "Part of a series. Click here for the cache that started the series" will no longer work?

Sorry for the previous reply. New to the forum and obviously don't know how to reply correctly. I am really upset that the previously "hidden" html text is now showing up in logs. We used this to hide the coords for a puzzle cache in a TB log and now the coords are clearly showing up in the log.

are you talking about HTML comments? those seem to work fine right now, i have a cache that uses them myself. or are you talking about other kinds of "hidden" text?

The magellan communicator no longer works  Tried it on two different PC's. Is this a problem with the site update? because everything was fine before the maintenance. It just says "Checking Magellan Communicator" and never does anything, the download and check device butttons are grayed out. Please help!

Is it too much to ask of Groundspeak that COs & TB owners get notified of changes to how listing pages work before they're sprung on everyone, to avoid things like this?

Is there a special place to report and categorize all these worldwide concerns created by this "one-way" update ?

Since yesterday update, link into logs changed from:

[url=http://coord.info/GC28QZQ]Halloween[/url]

to

<a href="http://coord.info/GC28QZQ">Halloween</a>

All old links are now "dead"!

I just recieved this answer from my local Reviewer, with no link:

Bonjour,

Merci de bien vouloir utiliser le service "Feedback" sur le site geocaching.com pour vos remarques.

Cordialement,

Miguaine - "Groundspeak Volunteer Reviewer".

Thanks for your help...

We have pushed a hotfix this morning which has re-converted all the old cache logs to use the original BBCode. This is so the raw code doesn't clutter them up until we can batch convert the old logs to HTML.

We also plan to switch the PQ screencast video to hidden by default.

I'm looking into the Magellan Communicator issue. We're working closely with them to sort it out asap.

Watching any "public profile" (even my own one) nothing happens when clicking the different "tabs", which worked perfectly before.

Just can see the content of the first tab.

Forgot to mention: Does not matter which Browser I try (Seamonkey 2.x, Konqueror, ...).

We upgraded to .NET Framework version 4.0 in the last release and Seamonkey is no longer supported, even though it was in version 3.5 (I am not sure about Konquerer).

That is not to say we can't do anything about it. We'll take a look and try to get it sorted for you.

I can no longer submit new caches - I receive this error -

"An Error Has Occurred

Your request has resulted in an error. Please return to this site's home page to continue."

I'd like to know more about this if you can give me some steps to reproduce the error. Thanks.

I'm submitting an unknown cache. I've used both Chrome and IE and in both cases the following page returns the error posted above.

I just logged a couple of caches.

I usually just copy my signature from the logging text box and then paste in each of the following logs after writing them.

I cannot copy now.

I am not sure if this has been reported or not.

Thanks

Took me a while to figure this out You have to click on 'source' to be able to paste. Would have been nice if we'd been warned about these things.

This new editor is going to take some getting used to  . I prepare my logs offline (I guess many people do, in GSAK, Notepad etc) then upload to field notes or copy and paste depending on volume.

I often insert smilies. This was easily done as the BB code could be entered offline. E.g

[: D] FTF [: D]

This was also easy to do online once one remembered the BB code for each smiley.

To achieve the same thing now I have to enter offline:

<img alt="[: )]" src="/images/icons/icon_smile_big.gif" title="[: )]" /> FTF <img alt="[: )]" src="/images/icons/icon_smile_big.gif" title="[: )]" />

And to do it online means positioning the cursor in the right place, selecting the smiley button, and selecting the required smiley. It's not exactly quick and easy .

Any chance of an easy shorthand to insert smilies, prefereably one which will also work offline?

(Smiley codes syntactically incorrect to prevent the forum software mangling them.)

We are rolling back the HTML editor for cache logs.

This should happen today. In the next dev cycle we're going to review the decision to implement this editor in the logs and perhaps re-release with modifications. Thanks for your patience over the last 24 hours.

I surely hope this fixes the issue with thwarted linefeeds in field-notes pre-typed in GSAK that are uploaded..

Can you confirm that this is on the list as well?

fail.jpg

Going through each log to fix this gets pretty old already after the 2nd one.. how about letting us who don't care about a fancy WYSIWYG-editor go directly to the raw editor?

Cheers

EDIT: In GSAK, the html from the commets in the GPX-file is also now visible for caches that have been logged after the update. Sigh.. I can see why saving the formatting in the DB right away gets better perfomance when viewing the entries, but man, oh man, this breaks so many things..

Thanks for all the hard work.

When I open the pocket query window, the link to the video appears. I click on "Do not show this video again." The next time I log on and open the pocket query window the link to the video appears. Why doesn't clicking on "Do not show ..." make it so that it doesn't appear again? I love pocket queries and use them all the time. I don't need the video and would like it to "not show." It is in the way. Thanks.

Is fixing the BBCode so that we can put colored text in our comments going to be returned to us?

No, I'm sorry but text color and font type will not be configurable in the logs. However, we will run a script to clean up the old BBCode tags so they will not look cluttered. I know that some, including yourself, enjoyed customizing the log text but for the sake of consistency and readability we feel this is the right move.

I'm not sure how a different color or font makes a log any more unreadable than bold, underline, italicized, or strikeout......or any combination of the aforementioned fonts.

It seems that you are only encouraging plain old "tftc" (note the lack of capitalization) logs like texters seem to prefer these days instead of wordy logs. How about a little thought in that area?

But like another post mentioned, maybe these changes are all about iPhone users?

Yes, please look into this. I filter my email on the word "Published" so now my "New Cache" folder is filling up with Watchlist items. This is a real pain.

Might or might not be related, but I just got an email saying one of my caches had been logged. However, it says it's an unpublished cache, even though it's been out for almost three years now! New glitch?

Haven't seen a response to this and it didn't seem to get fixed with the hotfix. There are <br /> inserted all over the place and if you already had them in a description, then there are five or six blank spaces between each line. Tried to fix it by editing, but even putting one <br /> in makes it double space and if you take all the <br /> out, then there is no spacing at all. You can view the trackable TB346MR as an example. The items in the "About This Item" were mostly single spaced and now have four spaces between some of them. HELP!

And we'd like to add our two-cents to the conversation about html. We have JUST learned how to do this properly by studying the Groundspeak knowledge books. Proud of ourselves, too, and hid some puzzle caches using our newly acquired knowledge. Please tell me we aren't going to have to archive them or figure out something else???? How unfair for something that's been around for a long time and seemed to work just fine. If it wasn't broken, why are we fixing it?

Any idea on when we'll get twitter integration with fieldnotes back? It's been down for over 2 months. I came back briefly last night after the update, but is broken again. This is a feature many of us would like to have back.

Agreed. I tried testing it last night, but it still doesn't update, even though the link is supposedly active. (according to the twitter update page)

Can't do that. Can't see who's moved trackables recently. I can't see my gallery (no link on the "other" profile page either).
