Why is it called a Fizzy challenge? I understand the concept - just not the reasoning behind the name - which I actually don't have any... lol

From Cacheopedia: The challenge is to find at least one cache of every difficulty–terrain combination (81 unique combinations), while also finding at least one of each type of cache (ignoring certain extremely rare cache types).

I've been working on the one in our province for awhile: http://coord.info/GC15P98

I had a blast with ours in Washington state

so I am going to make a Double Fizzy challenge

as soon as I get off my butt and get all 81X2

unless somebody beats me to it, then I will get to go claim the smiley

Wow, three responses, and none of them directly answers the OP's question: "Why is it called a Fizzy challenge?"

But the referenced Cacheopedia article does have the answer: It's to honor the cacher FizzyMagic. The first Fizzy Challenge cache was created by Kealia to honor the contributions of FizzyMagic to the local geocaching community. FizzyMagic's FindStats program performs statistical analysis of GPX files, and reports (among other things) the number of each type of cache found, and the number of caches found of each difficulty–terrain combination.
