The government program that used this style of disk was very short lived and I enjoy looking for them.

It appears that Albany County, Wyoming may have set as many as 266 (highest number seen in the designation column)

and at least 37 got PID's. I have logged nine of these in the past two cold windy days.

The one above is a NONPID but it was used as the AZ, along with the addition of RM 1 & 2, for the 1948

upgrade of SS #7 to second class horizontal order. SS # 50 MO0979 also was promoted and a quick scan

through the datasheets indicated several others with the same treatment.

Not all DS come right out and say 'U.S. COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY AND STATE SURVEY MARK' but that information

may be found in another DS - good reason to never DESTROY a DS.

George & all,

I visited three more SS locations this morning on the way to Colorado.

Two PID's , 1 good, 1 poor and this good NONPID.

I scrolled through the DS's for the ones that look like SS marks and found the four

below that give a 1934 date. All the settings that I have found look like

1930's pre-cast posts. I'm wondering if maybe many were set but not shot in until 1948?

There are now 42 SS type designations, six with non-published PID's and two NONPID. All but eight

DS's have text that indicate that they are in fact SS marks.

Might be worth looking for more that are used for an AZ for other triangulation stations - and then spend a couple of weeks hunting for them

Too much travel and baseball, so I'm way behind on logs and posting photos. kayakbird
