"Price: Free"

I forum searched this topic before posting, but all posts were from over a year ago. Any idea if we one day will be able to charge money for Wherigo's? I've got a lot of ideas, but some would be great if I could charge something like $0.99, like on the iPhone app store.

How does charging for a cartridge make the cartridge great?

It doesn't. But you could charge for a cart that really has lot of things in it.

 I don't think that charging for a Wherigo game would be right! I would hate to see a "charging" or "money gaming" start. I also don't understand why the "Price: Free" is even there? How would you like it if people started charging for "multi caches" on geocaching.com some of them took a lot of work making. What is the difference?

Just My thoughts..........

I can't imagine any cartridge having more "in it", than Ranger Fox's Whack-A-Lackey and he didn't try to charge for it. Quite the opposite, he shared the source code.

I don't think your idea will get much support among the community here.

My guess is that Groundspeak, at one point, thought they might be able to create "tour" cartridges etc. that could be sold.

I suspect that this is probably closer to the truth. On the Everytrail site that I use on occasion, they have a somewhat similar feature where the Community can submit "Guides" so that folks can buy the tracks along with a description of the POI's for a nominal fee. I'm not sure how popular it is, and I agree, it would be a pity to see that level of commercialism encroach on this site.

You'll probably have to contact Groundspeak about setting something like that up. I'm not sure the idea was totally fleshed out, and the field was never removed from the pages.

The price could be removed, at least for now.

Groundspeak hasn't touched the web site in over 2 years. I doubt removing the Price tag if high on their priority list.

When I was at Groundspeak during Geowoodstock this year, I was talking with a few developers. Eventually, we pulled Jeremy from the crowd and continued the discussion. We did touch on this, so I can offer a little information.

The original idea was companies (or individuals) could charge for premium content. All cartridge examples revolved around the tour guide concept, such as a cartridge that computes the most efficient route one can take at Disney World to get on the most rides. The feature was left as "Price: Free" and there isn't much code beyond that. This was the direction Wherigo was to take. The envisioned ratio of free to premium cartridges was never discussed.

Now, some opinions on the matter (please keep that in mind; my opinions and views do not reflect that of Groundspeak):

I do agree with removing the price label until/if this feature is developed. It's assumed free until a price is listed.

I would not agree with paying for a cartridge to find a geocache. I would see that as part of geocaching.com's premium membership. However, if you think you have a good idea and can make a Wherigo cartridge people will pay to download without the geocaching component, I'd say go for it. I believe, at the moment, most Wherigo players are also geocachers interested in finding another cache. Until Wherigo can stand apart from geocaching, I believe charging for cartridges would hurt Wherigo. (Granted, not updating the site in close to three years isn't doing much for it...)

That being said, we still have to come up with a way to include the third-party application developers in the loop. It will not be fair for others to charge for cartridges built or played by their free applications. I'd prefer kickbacks to them in such a way as it does not incite negativity or unproductive rivalry.

As for Whack-A-Lackey, I appreciate the compliment. I released the source code so those who wanted to dig deeper into Wherigo could learn and, hopefully, create some really neat cartridges of their own. My personal reward was and is seeing what others create.
