+ayrbrain Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 I am having problems trying to locate cache. When i switch on the gps and when I get the signal there is a message at the top of the screen about accuracy how do i get a more accurate indicator since it seems to change even when standing still. I (we) are so new to this. So any help much appreciated thank you Quote
Motorcycle_Mama Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 What GPS unit? And what exactly does the message read? Quote

It is probably better than that. Give it a try and see if you can find a cache. If you want to know the true accuracy, try to find a benchmark; or you can find a fixed location every day for a few days and see if it gives you similar readings each time. Quote

Try turning the receiver on in an open area, such as a field or parking lot, for 10 minutes or so. Getting a good signal lock to start can help, sometimes. Are the batteries running low? Some receivers have reception/accuracy problems under low power. Quote
+ecanderson Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 ...try to find a benchmark...Need to be a bit careful with that one. A great many benchmarks here in the U.S. have not been "re-surveyed" with accurate equipment, and the granularity of the coordinate data may only provide about 100' accuracy because it has been recorded in DD MM SS format (one second = 1/60 or 0.017 minute accuracy -- we deal in 0.001 minute accuracy when caching -- one second of error is 102' of latitude!). Further, the coordinates of such a benchmark are probably going to be in NAD83 format. The user will need to be sure to adjust the datum used on the GPS. Quote
+Cacheoholic Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 Might be worth trying a master reset. Quote
lolise Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 Hello, just started Geocaching with wife and kids...we tried 10 or 12 times to find Geocaches around home with no luck..Kind of frustration because I've been hunting with my GPS for at least 10 years and never got lost and always got out of the woods safe!!! I own two of them. Today we went on an outing with local geocachers and tired it again..they found the cache but My Gps said we were 40 meters away!! Then I clicked..I was in NAD27 CANADA mode for my hunting maps...and the geocachers were in WGS84 when I checked their GPS system..Maybe you should try that ..Because after 'recalibrating it while turning in a circle' didn't change a thing, and depending on what setup you are thyere is a huge difference.. PS: you'll find that in SETUP-System-Units-Map Datum...try that..might be it... Guizmo Lolise's husband Quote
lolise Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 To :ayrebrain Ah Yes..Don't forget to re-enter your waypoints 'after Changing' the map datum..because with mine It didn't work with old waypoint entries... Guizmo Quote
