+Paul n Susan Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 Okay, I'll bite. One of our *favourite* caches has been archived - Mining Some Cold Hard Cache. We've often thought that it would be great to emulate - and we've had similar caches recommended to us. Can anyone shed some light on this? Property issues? Safety issues? Environment issues? Whatever it is, we'll understand - after all, there are more important things in the world than us rooting around in a wet and dirty cave, although not that many. We just wouldn't want to compound a problem in the future, that's all. Many Thanks. Quote
+Keith Watson Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 I noticed that as well. Inquiring minds want to know. Quote
+t4e Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 i wouldn't hold my breath in hopes of getting an explanation its somewhat typical attitude "can't tell" "wont tell" apparently its better to just let everyone speculate of the reason Quote
+hamgran Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 (edited) Maybe RockHarder can tell us. Dave? You there? Edited October 2, 2010 by hamgran Quote
+CacheDrone Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 Before the listing was archived I did send a private message to RockHarder regarding the situation. While I appreciate that as a reviewer I am supposed to remain unbiased, I confess that I was saddened to have to archive the cache. It was apparent from the number of people watching it and the number of bookmark lists it was on that this cache was very much a beloved caching experience. However the reasons for the archival are related to a sensitive matter, one where human traffic should not be encouraged or increased. It also should be noted that the Cache Owner was credited for creating an enjoyable experience, and the reason for the archival in no way reflects on actions of the Cache Owner. Until I can provide more details, unfortunately some aspects of the decision must remain private. Likely RockHarder has received many emails about this already and with a cache that is so well respected it might be best if everyone would be patient and let the dust settle. Quote

+narcissa Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Looking at the nature of the cache and the mention of bats, my guess would be that this has something to do with the white-nose syndrome that is rapidly spreading, and devastating the little brown bat population. That's just a guess, I don't have any inside knowledge here. But this wouldn't be the first cache to be affected by this. White nose syndrome is still poorly understood, but there's some suspicion that humans may play a part in spreading the fungus between bat colonies, through activities like mine exploring and cave spelunking. +hamgran Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 Yeah, I thought the reason might be ecologically based, though I'd never heard of white nose syndrome. I do know that cave ecosystems are quite fragile, and I wouldn't doubt that with our large, noisy, flashlight-driven visits there we are disrupting things. It sure was fun, though. Glad I got to do it. Quote

Umm, he's Canadian, and he has a white nose. I vote for on-topic. Well, I did find that cache, and I'll bet we saw 10 bats in there (all sleeping on the roof). I actually sent an email cache owner asking about why it was archived. But either he's ignoring me, or doesn't use his Yahoo account any more. Quote

That link wasn't useless! Oh wait, are you saying that a URL without an explanation doesn't adequately make my point for me? Imagine that... Quote
