+Doctor A
I was recently given a gift of the city navigation software for my Garmin 60CSx. I like it a lot for getting me to caches, but there are times I'd like to rip the micro SD card out once I get close to GZ. This afternoon I was going to a cache that was behind a convoluted shopping center. I got to where I figured GZ was and in fact saw where I surmised the cache to be and where it turned out to be. But my GPS was still trying to give me driving directions to it. I could never get the little checkered flag to show up, which then would allow me to go to the compass page, which is how I navigate to find the cache. It seems like I should be able to just turn off the navigation feature, and I did find such a selection under the menu options, but if I do that, then it takes away the compass that I want to use to get me that last distance to the actual cache. Is there a way to select when the turn-by-turn directions are on? A friend of mine has two GPSs and uses one for the directions to get to the cache and then uses one that doesn't have the mapping software on it to find the cache. I don't own two, so don't have that luxury, but now I'm guessing this is exactly why he does this... Edited September 24, 2010 by Doctor A Quote Link to comment
+coggins
You are going to want to set the unit routing pref to "prompted", navigate "on road" for turn-by-turn driving and once you park, recalculate selecting "off road". No need for two units. Quote Link to comment

No need for two units. Yep, Sounds like the defaults are set. And by recalculate that means GOTO the waypoint again and select off-road instead of follow road. Should be located under main menu - set up - Routing. Edited September 24, 2010 by BlueDeuce Quote Link to comment
+dfx
or start using profiles. i have one profile for geocaching, which is set to off-road navigation, and then a profile for car navigation (and also one for bicycle) which will give me turn-by-turn directions. switching between them is fast and easy and you don't even need to reselect your destination. +BlueDeuce
A profile in a CSx model? I need to start reading the manual. huh, I never noticed the route profile. I normally don't build routes. (Still checking) Edited September 24, 2010 by BlueDeuce Quote Link to comment

There is an interesting part on route profiles. Not sure if it'll help with not having to reselect goto, but I'm checking. Quote Link to comment
+musthavemuzk
this is good info to have for my 62s. i get close to GZ and then have been looking for a new cache this time selecting go to offroad and not shortest route by distance using the OSM maps. that is a timesaver if i can just switch profiles. guess i need to do some reading. Monty The 62s should have profiles just like the Oregon series. What I did on my Oregon is setup an on-road geocaching profile and and off-road one. Once I get close, two touches to the screen and I'm navigating straight to the cache. Edited September 25, 2010 by bullygoat29 Quote Link to comment

+Doctor A
Thanks so much everyone! I've redone my setup and hopefully now will be even more thrilled about having the navigation software. I knew there'd be people here who would know right away how to help. Quote Link to comment

sviking
Um, on a 60CSx, to stop current navigation on the MAP page, just hit the "Menu" button and select "Stop Navigation". It's the very first selection. Change routing to "off road" and re-select the cache to get straight-line routing. I have mine set to "prompted" so it asks every time a destination is selected if you want to calculate for "on road" or "off road" when I have my City Navigator map set to the default map, i.e. renamed on the SD card. No "profiles" of any kind on the 60CSx like the Oregon has. Geez, people really DO need to get into their manuals more! Edited September 25, 2010 by sviking Quote Link to comment

But someone had hijacked the thread with a 62s and that's what the majority of us started responding to. Quote Link to comment
+musthavemuzk
correct the OP has a 60csx and i didnt mean to hijack with my 62s i was just curious how to do it on this model as well. i took some screenshots last night going from offroad to onroad. this is what i saw http://www.pbase.com/musthavemuzk/garmin62sthings as for reading the manual. i always read the manual. in the case of the 62s it came with a qucikstart manual and it tells you how to get to the digital html file on the unit or you can get the pdf file from the garmin site. so unless you want to print it you have to be in front of a computer to read it. even though i read the manual i dont always grasp the things it talks about. especially with a new to me gadget. so the learning curve comes into play here. i like the web and forums and interacting with others who have the same gadgets as they likely have faster easier to understand info.
