False Logs

Pasted from another thread:

"My TB Bowley`s Sigil someone has taken a picture showing the stamped number another geocacher has raised the question as whether this was OK to do."

One of the replys:

"The tag # should NEVER be made public. You should only know it if the bug has passed through your hands so you can enter logs against it."

I assume the reason that the number is kept 'secret' is so people won't make false logs. There are different ways to get tag numbers (one approach involving a lot of time and guessing).

Question: Has there been any false logs made?

I suggest that if a tag number is shown in a photo that the chance of false logs being made is very small. So small that it isn't worth worrying about.

At least false logs would still be *logs* - its really annoying when people pick up travelbugs but either don't log them, or can't figure out the proper method for logging them. rolleyes.gif hopefully some day the Groundspeak site will be more clear about exactly what to do. Currently a user must click in a few places and read through the instructions to figure out the process.

Imho, the default should be a step-by-step 'log the bug you found' page, which can then be bypassed to the current 'normal' system.

In another thread someone is talking about making their own tags and using the info from their travel bug tags.

You could do something like make the bug number black with dark red numbers or put it on a field with lots of wavey lines behind it. Something to try and trick a camera in to not recording the numbers correctly.

Or ... how about just not having the number face the camera when the picture is taken? icon_biggrin.gif

verything idiot proof. Not because the people we are dealing with are idiots but because a lot of them are underinformed and very new to the idea. Like myself.
