Simply Paul's June 2011 'Extreme' Event

Simply Paul

Recommended Posts

After some research into a long list of potential Scottish island and mainland locations for my next extreme event - following on from St Kilda in 2007, St Agnes IOS in 2008 and Unst in the Shetlands in 2009 and a tidal island off the coast of Jersey in the Channel Islands in June 2010 - it's the right time to return this series of events to their origin; an off-the-beaten-track location that offers visitors a very special experience... Basically I've run out of N/S/W geographical extremes to visit for now (but stay tuned- I'm working on something else rather special! No, it's not Lowestoft) but this is an extremely dramatic and interesting location on a little-visited island in the inner Hebrides. At the time of writing there's not even a cache on it! I'd hope to leave a cache behind with local support when I visit Eigg to climb An Sgurr.

I'll link to the event from this thread in late December, when I'm able to have the page listed. In the meantime, here's a photo to whet your appetite - The event will be held (so long as the weather means it's safe to reach) at the trig point at the 'bow' of the rock, at 393m (1290ft) above sea-level, which is where we'll be starting from:

Glad the location is tempting interest. The walk is about 9Km or a almost 6 miles in total - From the quay to the meet location & back. If I can organise 'the quick way down' this will take a bit off that. Date is TBC. I'd like it to be around the 21st of June for maximum sunlight but the folk of Eigg have a big bash on the weekend closest to the 12th to celebrate their historic purchase of the island from a series of iffy landlords in 1997. No cars allowed on the island without good cause (tradesman, disabled, etc) so I'll probably take a bicycle with me to the Small Isles; CalMac Ferries don't charge for them. More info as and when I have it :)

Following up on last week's Eiggy announcement, I have news of further Highland Adventures planned for June 2011:

Pub events; a mainstay of caching meets. Where better to compliment my 'Britain's Fifth Most Remote Event Cache (Eigg)' event than one in mainland UK's most remote pub, The Old Forge, Inverie, Knoydart. There's even a cache near by. Earlier in the day I intend to climb the localish (Metric) Munro, the 1010m (3346ft) Ladhar Bheinn, which is a hearty 22Km round route walk away - I may take a shorter route if I find a good description of one. I'll only attempt this walk/climb if the weather is settled enough. You'd be welcome to join me for that but it's not the event. I'm only doing it to build up a thirst

More news, as and when...

This event is firmly in my plans for next year, never felt inspired to go to an event cache before but this one has caught my imagination as a treat to myself for my 50th birthday. I am thinking I really should include GC1T7V1 (Three Peaks Challenge Bonus: Ben Nevis) also by simply Paul so I will be re-visiting the peaks of Sonwdon and Scarfell before hand. A trip up Ben Nevis during the week of this event should then have the three peaks bonus within my grasp. Anyone else thinking of attempting the Three Peaks Challenge Bonus whilst in Scotland for the event cache?

Link to comment

While I'm in the area I'd be happy to climb Ben Nevis again. Last year's event up there was amazingly well attended, given where it was. So I'm sure there'd be no shortage of people interested. It's also been drawn to my attention that the top of the shelter is higher than the top of the trig point, where I 'held' the 2009 meet. If I were to organise another get-together, I wonder if we could do it there; the real highest point in Britain?

Having pondered nevryan's suggestion, I had a look at my schedule for my Scotland trip and there's time to have a day on Ben Nevis. Thus I'm going to arrange a CITO event at the top; anyone who's been up there will know it's not the cleanest of spots so gloves and sturdy rubbish bags will add an extra dimension to the climb and geomeet. The date is yet to be set, but the last half of June or very early July is in the frame at the moment. More info on this event, as well as the Eigg and Knoydart pub ones, to follow as I have it :P

(Ben) More? You're spoiling us Mr Simply!

In addition to a CITO meet to tidy-up the 'roof of Britain' atop Ben Nevis, a pub event in mainland Britain's most remote hostelry and a climb to the top of Eigg (for 'cracking' views?) already announced for summer 2011, I'm going to add a meet on top of Ben More, close to the UK's oldest remaining (1st set in Scotland but the archived GC4E in England was the 1st in Britain or the UK) geocache while I'm doing my own Highland (cache) Clearances:

GCF0 Scotland's First - It's quite a way off the beaten track and with just 57 finds in almost 10 years (set December 15th - the last remaining live UK cache from 2000), finders will be members of a pretty exclusive club. Date TBC but it'll be in the latter half of June 2011 or very early July. It's on a Munro for baggers of 3000ft hills and at 1174m, it's a Metric Munro too. In fact, Ben More is the highest mountain south of Strath Tay.

I hope you agree it's shaping up to be quite a fortnight of geocaching experiences. Fingers crossed for good weather

Edit: I've just spotted Scotsbob is holding an event on December 15th this year to celebrate the cache's 10th birthday: GC2BXRY 10 year anniversary of Scotland's First. As someone who went to Goldpot's excellent GC253NT GC4E England’s First! 10th anniversary meet for the now archived GC4E England's First! (Actually Britain's first cache, I think) I'd love to attend but I doubt I'll get up to Scotland for it. :)

As the 4th finder, back in May 2003, I can tell you that this one is no walk in the park. As my (ex)wife was waiting for me at the bottom, I didn't have time to carry on up to the summit so I may well join you for this one. It would be good to finally log the trig-point at the top. :)

Thanks Matt. I don't know the cache you mean (there's not one shown on it) but perhaps a little research might uncover the link... :) [edit: I've found it, I think. Now to work out the co-ords ]

The cache on Ben More is at about 760m (almost 2,500ft) so a stiff climb, but parking is around 170m (560ft) which takes some of the sting out of it. The terrain looks like it could be the bit that makes it hard work. Any route advice ahead of the event would be good John

Further to the above, and as mentioned on this thread, the location I've been looking at is Castle Stalker, as seen at the end of Monty Python and the Holy Grail as Castle Aaaagghhghghh! I've learned it's open between 30th May - 3rd June and 11th July - 15th July 2011 (amongst other, earlier and later dates). Neither of these periods are particularly good for my travel plans but it's just possible I'll be able to stay in Scotland a 3rd week and make the July 11th opening a cache event. More info when I have it...

Summer 2011 SP Remote Cache Event News!

I've now seen a CalMac timetable for trips out to the Small Isles (I hope to visit them all) and, along with the dates of the ETO Show revealed on a 2011 wall planner (June 26-27), I now have enough information to work out a very compressed schedule for 10 days in the Highlands. My plans for June are:

Wed 15?/ Thu 16th - Drive up from Bucks, perhaps stopping in the NW of England on the way (car share available).

Fri 17th- AM caching on the west coast. PM ferry from Mallaig (mainland) to Canna. Set cache there? (zero atm).

Sat 18th- AM ferry from Canna to Muck. Set cache there? (zero atm). PM ferry from Muck to Rum.

Sun 19th- No ferries run on Sundays. Caching on Rum (7 atm) by bike & enjoying the wilderness.

Mon 20th- AM caching (perhaps placing). PM ferry from Rum to Eigg. 5th REMOTE EVENT & perhaps placing.

Tue 21st- AM Exploring Eigg. PM ferry from Eigg back to Malliag. Evening caching on the west coast. MAX DAYLIGHT!

Wed 22nd- AM ferry to Knoydart for THE OLD FORGE PUB EVENT. PM climbing local Munro & caching (3 atm).

Thu 23rd- Ferry from Knoydart (Iverie) to Mallaig, caching on Moidart, heading to Fort William.

Fri 24th- CITO EVENT on BEN NEVIS, caching in the area, driving south, more caching...

Sat 25th- BEN MORE/OLDEST UK CACHE EVENT, then heading south (car share still available).

Sun 26/Mon 27th - Trade show in Birmingham. (I could drop any car-sharer/es at a train station for them to get home on Saturday night).

I plan to take a bicycle across to the Small Isles as this is free, plus a tent, but they all have B&Bs or bunkhouses; drop me a line if you're interested in getting a group booking together. Any caches left behind will be with both landowner approval (this tends to be easy when one person owns the whole island!) and with a maintenance plan in place. The islands all have Trigpoints for baggers and the Eigg one, where my event will be held, is also a past YOSM site and thus loggable. The post-pub Knoydart walk will visit another TP, at 1010m, and Ben More and Ben Nevis have their own TPs, of course.

I'll add links to the above events (only ones up to the 22nd are in the waiting list at the moment due to the 6-month prelisting rule) when I can. In the meantime, feel free to comment, ask questions and generally get excited about a selection of what should be fun events (weather depending!) in some of the most beautiful places the UK (heck; the world!) has to offer

I visited Eigg, Rum and Muck a couple of years ago with a friend while 'collecting' islands and can thoroughly recommend them all. We climbed up An Sgurr, which wasn't as hard as it looks from the bottom and the views from the top are wonderful. There is an excellent hostel on Eigg - Glebe Barn http://www.glebebarn.co.uk/ - although the owners weren't keen on taking bookings from individuals very far in advance. The hostel at Kinloch Castle on Rum is also excellent, even if it is falling apart! On our last night we got upgraded at no extra cost to two of the grand antique filled bedrooms you get shown on the tour of the castle - not bad for £14 a night! http://www.isleofrum.com/placestostay-bb,.html# Most of the caches on Rum are a long way to walk to from Kinloch. Rum is also notorious for midgies, although when we were there it was too windy for them to be a problem. The Isle of Muck also has a cosy hostel http://www.isleofmuck.com/ The lady who looks after it met us at the ferry with a wheelbarrow to carry our luggage in.

GC2EWR8 Britain's Fifth Most Remote Event Cache (Eigg) has been listed for Monday, June 20th, 2011! I'm still waiting on the others but will add links as soon as I'm able.

Thanks PurplePenguin, some great info there. I plan to take a bicycle to make getting about on Rum especially easy and a tent across to minimise costs but I doubt I can pass up on a night in a castle, especially at that price. I'm hoping June is early in the midge season to miss the worst of them but will be packing some Avon Oh So Soft and perhaps a midge net in case.

Metal-bijou, I don't mind sharing the driving if you don't mind sharing the petrol. There would even be room in the car for a second bike, with careful packing :)

If this sounds good you'd need to check if you can take the bike on the train from Brum home, but this isn't usually a problem except at peak times & I'd get to Birmingham later than that.

I am starting to come up with a travel plan, I intend to do the Eigg meet, as Simply PAul is aiming at 7PM summit I take it some wild camping will be in order (or a late arrival back at some pub with a camp site) I really want to do Ben Nevis via the CMD arete as I have done the tourist route a few times so that one is in the mix. Unless I can find a boat in and hike out option for Knoydart then I think I will go over to the east where there is a CacheCon which would make for another wild camping couple of days. I hope to finish up on Scotlands oldest then head for home (Suffolk) making a full week out of it.

Three Men Go to Scotland Episode 2 got repeated last night. It's now available on iPlayer in the UK until 12:29AM, Monday, 17th Jan 2011.

Ginger4x4, I'm waiting to hear back from metal-bijou (or his mrs) about his plans but there could well be a seat available up from Bucks. Please post a note of your interest on the cache page (link above) so I can keep track of who's interested. This also applies to anyone else :)

nevryan, there is both wild camping and a campsite on Eigg, as well as various other forms of accommodation. I've only climbed Ben Nevis via the classic tourist route (2.7 times) so would welcome a change of path. It's quite possible to take the boat to Inverie (Knoydart) and walk out, but it's a two day hike and would be risky to do alone. Plus you'd need to find transport from Kinloch Hourn or Murlaggan to the A87 and 'civilisation' but it might be possible to get back to your car at Mallaig with some good timing, hitching, postbuses, or pre-arranged car-share thing..?

Hi Simply Paul, thanks for the input, so are you planning to hike up to the event on Eigg and then back to a camp site or are you thinking wild camping? If you are still thinking long way up and short way down then I guess getting to a campsite after a short event meet would be OK

At that time of year, that far north, it's light until 11pm so there would be no rush down, even if via the long route. I've not decided which sort of campting to do yet - I need to check where the campsite is in relation to the hill and jetty to plan a course of action. I'll update the cache page when I know what's what :)

Latest news:

Plans continue to move ahead. I've had a reply from Stewart, the NTS's Property Manager for the remote Isle of Canna. He's aware of the game and keen to help me bring caching to the island by helping me site it and maintain the box. Nothing from the other islands yet but I hope to hear back from them by June.

I've also heard from Georgie of the out-of-this-world looking Kinloch Castle on Rum, my last stop before Eigg:

"We currently have all room types available for Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th of June. I'll give you a list of the rooms available and prices - just keep in mind if you want the dorm rooms to yourselves, you will need to pay for all the beds.

3 x Oak Room Doubles - £55 per room per night

2 x Hostel Doubles - £45 per room per night

2 x Twin Dorm rooms - £45 per room per night

William Bass Room - 5 single beds £90 per room per night

1 x 5 bed dorm

1 x 6 bed dorm

1 x 7 bed dorm

2 x 8 bed dorms

Let us know what your numbers are and the room types and we can book you in. We take a deposit of the first nights stay to confirm the booking - this is payable by card or cheque made out to Kinloch Castle. We could provisionally book you in and hold the rooms for 2 weeks if this makes it easier for you to plan"

Would anyone interested in staying at the castle - do take a look at the link - drop me an email please :)

February update. As you may know, I'm hoping to place caches on all the Small Isles (off the west coast of Scotland, just south of Skye) when I'm in the area for my Remote Event on Eigg in June. At the moment, of the four inhabited islands only Rum has got caches yet. I've already had the ok from the National Trust for Scotland to hide one on Canna with the help of their ranger there - see above. I've also received the following from Ruth MacEwen (the MacEwen's own Muck):

"Re: Geocaching on Muck?

Dear Paul,

I have emailed the Isle of Muck community, and the MacEwen family about you hiding a cache on Muck. There doesn't seem to be a problem with this. A number of people hadn't really heard about geocaching, but they realise the fun visitors could have in using their GPS and are up for the new activity.

You are welcome to place the cache wherever you wish whilst you are here.

I can arrange for someone to meet you from the ferry closer to the time (if you would like to talk about the island), otherwise we will just let you have your walk and hopefully enjoy what Muck has to offer.

Best wishes

Ruth MacEwen"

So that's two green lights! I'm still waiting to hear back from Eigg (more complex as there are lots of landowners there) and Rum. I do love how caching can 'take you somewhere you might not otherwise have a reason to visit' - and that goes for placing as well as finding (with permission & a maintainance plan in place :))

Looking forward to seeing more of the events listed so I can firm up my plans and confirm with work which week I will be taking off. I keep looking at my rucksack Etc and thinking maybe something bigger is in order to accomodate some overnight hikes inbetween the events.

I'll list the three other events (Knoydart remote pub on Wed 22nd June, Ben Nevis CITO on Fri 24th and Ben More/UK's oldest cache on Sat 25th) as soon as I'm allowed. The 6-month rule doesn't apply to them I'm told. There's been a minor hiccup. Despite confirming my booking at Kinloch Castle on Rum last month, they emailed to say the whole place has now been taken by a wedding party and would I like a different weekend... So it's looking like I'll save my £28+ and camp on Rum for a couple of nights instead. Pity; I hope to visit the castle anyway, if there's still public access with the wedding on.

Hi again. Yes, the overall dates are fixed by my magazine's deadline and trade show dates - the window between them and the locations of the events pretty much means I'm committed to them. The only thing which might upset the plans are transport breakdowns (ferries can get pulled out of service) and bad weather. I'll have Plan Bs in place for both of these. For example, if it's blowing a gale, the Eigg event would be moved off the top of the cliff to somewhere safer. I'll try to get everyone's mobile number and give them mine too, in case of any changes which are forced on me. Hope that's helpful.

Edit: GC2F03P - Meet at The Old Forge (Inverie, Knoydart) on Wednesday the 22nd of June 2011 has been approved; thank you Deceangi! Come visit mainland's Britain's most remote pub, reachable only by boat or after a two day walk across the country's last real wilderness. More event news to follow in the next few days I hope :)

Extra Edit: GC2FPD9 - Top of the World* CITO Event on Friday the 24th of June 2011 has been approved too; thank you again Deceangi! A chance to leave the highest point of the UK and Britain slightly tidier than you found it with a CITO meet on top of Ben Nevis. It'd be great if you could join me. Bring bags and gloves.

And the fourth (and final, unless something amazing presents itself) of my Scottish summer events has been approved; thank you Royal Oak! GC2FVMA - (Ben) More? I'm Spoiling You! is on Saturday, June the 25th, 2011. Ben More is a metric Munro and the highest mountain south of Strath Tay. It's also home to Britain's oldest cache; the last one hidden in 2000 which is still live in the UK. We'll pass this bit of caching history on the way to the top for the cache meet at 1174m. I hope you can join me for a meet with a view (weather willing!) :)

There's an extra cache to find on the Knoydart peninsula, released today: GC2PJZG A (very) long way for a drink! by pete37038. It's close (513ft) to my GC2F03P Meet at The Old Forge (Inverie, Knoydart) event set for Wednesday the 22nd of June, 2011. So with a Metric Munro to climb, a pub to have an event in, and now a whole four physical caches within a mere eight miles, what's holding you back?

Hey guys, First post on the forum ;)

TheMullen an I are new to Geocaching but we love the outdoors and a good challenge. We're busy with work so most of the events we'll have to give a miss.

We do however, time and finance permitting, intend to join you on the summit of Ben More. It's been a long time since I trekked up Ben More and I wish I knew about Geocaching back then. I would would have saught out 'Scotlands first'.

We plan to start early as we will be shouldering our bikes, so it'll take us a little longer than most. Should make for some great photos and an exciting trip back down.

hi there

I would like to join for the '' extreme''??? event

could any one coming through glasgow or nearby car share ??

been in Knoydart before but not on the iles

thanks

tunnock

Woops, sorry tunnock. I missed your post. I'll be coming through Glasgow but will probably have a car full of bicycles - That is unless I get me plus two to come up from the SE (waiting to hear back from a couple of cachers who've shown an interest), in which case bikes will be on a carrier because I can't fit three people plus bikes in the car. If that happens I'd have a spare seat; drop me an email via my profile and I'll let you know if I have room. Or just head over to the islands on the train; it goes from Glasgow to Mallaig, where the boats to Knoydart and the Small Isles sail from.

Speaking of which, just over a month til this expedition- bump :)

Bump for this.

I've spoken to the SNH chap on Rum about hiding a cache there (he knows about the existing ones on the island, left by a German visitor in 2006) and have a green light, along with a list of areas to avoid due to nesting birds. I plan to do some maintenance on the old caches on the island too. This only leaves Eigg itself to get permission to leave a cache on, along with a local guardian. I'm still working on it.

Hotels are booked, two bikes will fit on my car's back seat and the weather *will be fine* :)

Ummm... events on islands, up Marilyns and Munros... how can we resist.

We will be going ahead of Paul for the islands. Current plan is to spend the weekend before Paul sets off getting to Skye and having a few days there before heading to Rum on the Wednesday, then to Eigg on the Saturday (the ferry goes via Canna and Muck so we will at least get to see them up close maybe even jump off for 5 minutes) ready for the event on the Monday; we will probably be up he hill early to play radios.

We should then be on the ferry to Mallaig the next day and over to Inverie on the Wednesday ready for that event. We will be staying there two nights to give us a good chance of climbing Ladhar Bheinn which we will probably tackle on the Thursday (we will need some time at the top :D )

Our late return means we will miss the Ben Nevis CITO but we may come down to the Ben More event. It will depend on how we feel and the weather.

Hope to see a few more at the events,

Helen and Carolyn

Final bump for these four events before I pack up and head north. The weather seems to be settling down... :)

Extra info for the Knoydart crossing:

Knoydart-ferry.co.uk have £11 single/£20 return crossings from Mallaig to Inverie at 10.15am, departing Inverie at 11am. They also have a 2.15 sailing from Mallaig which leaves Inverie at 3pm.

Knoydartferry.com have £10 each way (free for bikes) crossings on the same route, leaving the mainland at 11.30am on Wednesday, with a return sailing at 5pm on Thursday, on top of their usual timetable (see website)

Or you can always walk in from Kinloch Hourn, but it'll take a couple of days...

Looking forward to meeting a few new brave souls, either on Eigg, Knoydart, up Ben Nevis or on Ben More.

Due to major issues for the Scottish geocaching community, with Visitors placing caches and providing details of a local Non Geocacher who is the local Maintainer. Only for the cache to never be maintained by them, this covers over 75% of all visitor caches in Scotland. I now require all Visitor Placed Caches, to have a Local Geocacher as the local Maintainer, this persons user name is added to the Publish log.

Due to a incident in which someone claimed that a local cacher was maintaining their Vacation cache, without actually even contacting the person and asking them if they would maintain it. Naming the Local Maintainer in the Publish log, also allows local cachers to contact that person directly, if there are any issues, and allows the named person to complain if they have not been asked and agree to act as local Maintainer.
