L0ne.R Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 I'm watching Global News TV - a commercial has come on for "Parks 100" celebrating Calgary's Parks 100th anniversary. They're advertising a geocaching challenge. I looked at their website but the servers are down. There must be a lot of interest in the challenge (possibly generated from this commercial). I'm floored that geocaching is part of a promotional parks commercial. Times they are a changing. It's becoming mainstream. It's great to see Parks admin seeing the value of geocaching. Quote
northernpenguin Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 That's great to see! For something a bit more local - check out the Seaway Trail, which has local government support in PA, NY and you can get geocoins for visiting their caches Quote
CanadianRockies Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 I'm watching Global News TV - a commercial has come on for "Parks 100" celebrating Calgary's Parks 100th anniversary. They're advertising a geocaching challenge. Yes, it's been a great collaborative effort. The Calgary Parks Department approached the Calgary Area Cachers and asked if we would distribute 100 new caches in 100 city parks over a four-month period. A local GPS store donated most of the cache supplies, some swag, and some prizes. The Parks Department donated additional swag and launched lots of GCs and TBs. They also purchased GPS receivers for all the public library branches (and the bird sanctuary) to lend out to new geocachers. We've found about 70 of the caches so far and have enjoyed discovering the great diversity of the city parks. Quote
hugman Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 That's awesome. In our very first find we located a GC from this project. We picked it up and it's on its way to a mystery location now. Quote
CanadianRockies Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 Last week, I met the Calgary Parks Department employee who is heading up the project. She said it has been a big success from the city's perspective as well. Lots of people (including new geocachers) are visiting the park caches. The bird sanctuary is incorporating geocaching into some of its environmental education classes and are finding it to be wildly popular, especially among children. Quote
theallans Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 As new geocachers because of this project my family thinks it is a great idea! The chance to borrow a GPS unit from the library and go to caches that are in our beautiful city parks really got us hooked without having to spend any money. Unfortunately, after the fabulous CCAR event this past weekend, and seeing how easily others were finding caches with better technology has made me realize I now need to make a cash outlay. I believe this city project has been and will continue to be a great benefit for geocachers in Calgary. Quote
