OK The RACE is on!!!

Once upon a time there were TWIN helecopters who made a bet.

Race around the World, finishing before Dec 5, 2003

Rules:

1. Visit England

2. Visit Japan or Australia

3. Visit Hawaii

Hurry said to Harry, "I bet I can get around the world in 80 days, just like Phineas Fogg."

Harry replied, "I bet I can too, and I bet that I can BEAT you around the world."

So sure enough these two twins decided that they would race around the world, and try to be back at the start by December 5, 2003, and enjoy a nice Christmas season at home.

So the Race is on....

I hope your TBs achieve their goals, but I also hope you realize the liklihood of them doing so is practically nil. If you ever see them again, it will be noteworthy. If they make it around the world, it will be wonderful. If they visit the specified countries enroute, it will be amazing. And if either of them should do it within 80 days, it will border on miraculous.

I've launched 10 travel bugs from various places around the world since March, 2002 with the goal of returning to a specific cache in the U.S. Not one of them has completed the mission yet, and three of them have gone missing.

Launching travel bugs is in some ways similar to placing a message in a bottle and casting it into the ocean. One can hope to hear of its travels someday, but one should really not expect to ever see it again. To do so invites disappointment.

He who anticipates failure shall not be disappointed. He who anticipates success may find his wishes fulfilled, or his hopes dashed. He who wills the world to turn, as it will, will always be suprised when the unexpected comes to pass.

Sure, it was ridiculous in 1890 too, but a fun story.

Let's do some math.

24,000 miles divided by 366 days (counting the date-line) is about 66 miles per day, If the trip took a YEAR, or in a car an hour a day. Taking into effect modern JET travel, given continous flight, it is possible to fly around the earth in about 78 hours, now if the Concorde was used @2000 mph, then 12 hours would be optimistic estimation, of course with an ORBITING vehicle at 17,000 effective GMPH the 90 minutes to circumnavigate is AVERAGE.

In reality of course I expect the trip to take months, but I have a couple of TBs that have individually been to Hawaii and back in three weeks, been to Paris and back, three weeks, so extending THAT I think it is POSSIBLE.
