Adding a Comment in the field notes

We have a new Oregon 450 and noticed that we can add a comment after pressing the found cache button. Is there a limit to how much you can type in for your log? Can we ramble on about how much we enjoyed finding the cache or are you limited to just typing something short like "TFTC"?

I don't know of any limit but given the screen and typing procedure I wouldn't think long winded would be useful. You have to go to the froggies site anyhow to make them a log (hope you didn't think that when they were uploaded they were a log).

 

I just put in a couple of words to remind me about what to write when I get to a computer.

Although I haven't counted the number of characters myself, others have given the maximum as 50 characters, and that seems about right. It isn't enough to type in a really meaningful log (and, as Walts Hunting points out, the interface is less than ideal), so I abbreviate a lot and try to enter reminders of the experience that I can expand later when I upload the Field Notes to the Web site.

I have the OR 400T and there IS a character-count limit. Maybe someday it will be upped to 4 or 5 times the present limit, but a couple of words to trigger memories when transferring to online logs is better than none at all.

480 characters comes to mind, but yes, there is a limit.

 

I really can't imagine me typing 480 characters onto my oregon while I'm standing at a cache. As others have said, a couple words, then I expand my notes when I get back to my computer.

I just counted the exact number of characters my Oregon 550t, with the latest beta software (3.74), will accept in the Field Notes (Comment) field. The unit accepted 50 characters, exactly. YMMV.

Same result (50 characters) with my Oregon 300, which should have the latest (or next to latest) release firmware.

OK found the answer to my question.

Cannot view or edit on the gps. Have to connect to computer and go here:
