People sometimes go together in a group and their group gets FTF meaning all of the members in it get FTF. In other cases two people looking for a cache 'bump' into each other and make there own temporary 'group' and share FTF. Do see what I'm getting at? Although only one person technically finds it the rest of the group is credited; like in movies the actors don't get all of the credit, they are just a part of the 'group'.

If you share in the effort you deserve it I think. I found a multi with a cacher I bumped into. He did the looking and I did the puzzle solving.

 

If someone just lets another person make the find, waltzes up to them to sign to me thats just cheap. It is only a game so to me it just means these people lose their honor.

Why are you scrutinizing other people's logs like this? If the cache was put back for you to find, why get all judgmental about the way someone else plays the game? It's not a contest. Define a "find" for yourself and don't worry what others do when it has no impact on you.

What's the alternative?

 

We go out in a group of four normally (two user IDs comprising two people each). We all plan the route and walk to GZ and start searching.

 

Inevitably only one of the four find the cache.

 

Both 'teams' sign the log and we move on to the next, which someone else in the group will probably find.

 

If the OP is saying only one person (or team) finds it so only one can log it then we have a problem don't we, because everyone has now seen the cache and knows where it is, but one 'team' can't log it under that logic.

 

So what do you suggest?

All retreat to a safe distance - 100, 200 feet?

Then send each individual player (or should it be team of 2), who didn't find the cache, back to GZ and make them 'find' the cache again, even though they know full well where it is by now.

That would get a bit tedious after a while.

I know some teams actually send one in at a time while the rest watch. When I cache with friends we are there to have fun together and that is how we handle team caching. Just keep it fun.

So, a family that caches with their kids, or a husband/wife team... they all need to have their own accounts, and if Dad is the one to spot the cache, little Susie isn't able to claim a find for it? You're just mean!

Normally I just say "Cacher X found it in the fake rock. Cacher Y found it in Cacher X's hand." and leave it at that. Today I am going to try a different approach. Who gets to wear the NFL championship ring. Everyone on the team or just the guy that scored the winner TD?

I cache with my two little girls, we all have our own accounts, we all sign the logbook, and they all log it as a find. Eventually they will grow up and want to see a list of all the cache's they have found---even the ones where they were a step or two behind their sister or mother.

 

It more in the way you think about it *we* found the cache, together-sharing in the search and the find.

With some groups, each person will find the cache, then walk away and let the others find it until all have.

 

In other groups one person will find it and everyone will gather around and sign the log.

 

Both practices are common in the geocaching world. The "let everybody find it" method is kind of impractical with large groups.

 

In the latter case you are part of a team and the hunt was a team effort, so why shouldn't all of the team members log a find? When a sports team wins a game the entire team celebrates the victory, not just the person scored the winning touchdown, goal or run.

 

When I'm caching with a group one of us (say Bill) will say something like, "Bob, you check out that stump. Ted, take a look at that hollow tree. Mortimer, check under that bench and I'll look in these rocks". If the cache is under the bench should Mortimer be the only one who gets to log the find? He might not have found it if Bill didn't tell him to look there.

When I'm caching with someone new, I will try to pretend I didn't find it when I do and try to let them find it, but a lot of times I yell out "found it" way quicker than it takes me to remember that I wanted to pretend I didn't find it.

 

Also with groups that have cached before, whoever finds it makes the grab for the team and everyone logs it. I see no problem with that.

 

Personally though, I won't do a puzzle cache with someone that hasn't solved the puzzle (although I did one in NY with my brother). In the case where they haven't solved the puzzle, I'll tell them that they should solve the puzzle before logging it as a find. A lot of times the cache is a lot more difficult just because of the puzzle, so I feel like doing the cache and finding it is only half the smiley. I understand that a lot of people don't do that though and will have one "puzzle solver" for the group.

If it is early in the morning, or one of those c-c-cold winter days, getting the coffee may be the most important job on the team.

If 2 people are out caching together then the searching time at each cache is (on average) halved because 2 people can cover more ground than one. Therefore no matter which person sees and extracts the hidden cache, the "find" was a team effort. Multiply this scenario over a whole days caching, finding multiple caches and it's obvious how teamwork helps
