Geotrails with Geocoin Rewards

Use the trails listed here in this post as the current active list with as current a link as I have found. Some links have changed and some geotrails have ended for the year. I've also added in the new geotrails in the above posts. In short, if you don't see it here it is no longer active. As always, keep posting additional trails or updated info and I'll keep this going.

Have a new one to add to PA, the Armstrong County Geotrail. There's a chance that the trail is not active yet, I'll be able to confirm tomorrow if it is or not. It is definitely funded, passports printed, coins minted, etc.

Also, the South Mountain Geotrail in PA officially starts on October 16.

Spoke with the director of tourism for Armstrong County and she said the trail is in place but not active just yet due to some timing setbacks. She assured me it will be launched soon.

Also, can anyone verify the Petersburg National Battlefield VirtualCache program is still in place? It was launched the summer of 2009 but all the links, including the contact information, are no longer active.

Finally, the Legacy of Conservation geotrail in Pa has a new and slightly different web address they just updated in the past couple days: http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/geotrail.aspx

I received my passport a few days ago from an upcoming event called the Cameron County Geocache. 33 new permanent geocaches will be hidden and activated on Oct 16. You'll have 2 days to collect 15 stamps at any of the 33 caches. The first 300 filled passports will earn a powder metal coin (this aea is home to many great powder metal plants. Here's the front of the coin....

With some very new geocachers setting up the gathering, there have been some problems getting it listed as an event...I'm going to find out what went wrong and assist in turning into an event, but if not, 33 new caches should be a good draw! Information and passports are available through the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce

Found a link for it (sort of). I interpret the details one of two ways, so I'm not sure if this is a two day only event or not, depends on if this is going to be a true event or an actual geotrail.

Having done the AGT caches in this county, I suspect that there will be a lot of coins left yet even with two days due to mountain roads and mud. Cameron County is beautiful and home to the majority of our PA elk herd. But October weather in this area of PA can make traveling through the mountains difficult for all but four wheel drives as a lot of it is not paved.

Thanks, we still have to do Cameron County for the AGT. Hopefully the rain will quit and we will have a couple of nice weekends coming up.

A bit out of the way for a lot of you but in British Columbia, Canada there is an area of the province called Gold Country. The Gold Country area is about a 2 hour drive from end to end. There are 72 Gold Country specific caches hidden in Gold Country and if you find 24 of their caches (by collecting stickers in each cache) you redeem them for your Gold Country 24 Caches Found Gold Bar! (trackable on geocaching.com of course) If you get all 72 caches then you get a special 3" trackable coin!

I don't know if this is the type of thing you were talking about but it sounded close!

Our last Challenge in Spartanburg, South Carolina cost us about $125.00 for each coin. That's food, gas, motel room.

We could BUY a lot of coins for that $250.00 but they wouldn't mean as much to us.

I'm not adverse to non US geotrails being included in the geotrail list so I'll add this one in easily enough (even found a nice link for it). On the same note, if anyone has any geotrails outside of the US, please list them here and I'll add them.

With the merging of the threads, it looks like a little bit of data got lost. Combined with a couple more geotrails going down for the season and a few more that people emailed me or mentioned in this thread, I'm going to have a better more accurate list done tomorrow.

Updated trails for 2011 coming up in the next couple weeks. A few projects got nixed but a couple are set up for spring. If anyone knows of any active, upcoming, or proposed geotrails with geocoin rewards, post in this thread.

Would be very intersted in seeing the list. When I first read this, I thought of a Challenge the Mississippi Geocachers Association is working on with the Blues Trail. Is there a link with more information? I really like the part about issuing passports.

I would like to share more about this with MSGA... maybe we can get something from MS added to the list.

Sorry for the delay on this one, real life and all that. I finally have the new 2011 list of geotrails all together. Four websites have changed, eight geotrails have been removed as no longer active (sorry Oregon, you took a big hit), and three new ones have been added (DE, PA, and TX each got one). I suspect that many of the inactive geotrails will be replaced with a 2011 equivalent. Also, with geocaching becoming a lucrative activity to promote tourism, I predict more and more of them will be cropping up.

For those just tuning in, this is a list of geotrails that provide a geocoin as a reward for completing it. I have made a couple exceptions to this "rule", but the reward should be substantial and of some quality. Though the list is currently an all US list (the lone Canada trail I was watching is no more), I will be glad to add any and all geotrails with rewards. I also add upcoming or proposed geotrails as well.

Also, due to the mechanics of the forums, I cannot edit this post after 24 hours. As before, I'll be updating the list through smaller posts and when there has been a sizable change in the list make a new master list. So please post any geotrails you are aware of not included in this list. Also, if any that are posted have ended or end at some point after this post, please let me know.

There are 3 new trails in the mid-atlantic region (Wicomico, Capt. John Smith, and Main Street WV) that I know of or are coming soon! Also, the south Mountain trail in PA is apparently now awarding coins. It was listed as requiring 30 finds but they didn't have that many caches published.

I sent some information in but Clearfield County in Pennsylvania just opened up a trail with a geocoin, its a proposed five year project with a different theme each year, this years theme is cemeteries. There are 30 caches and you need 25 for the coin. The coin is a nice large wooden coin made from all PA Hardwoods. With the AGT in surrounding counties, and sites for DCNR's Legacy of Conservation trail in Clearfield County and surrounding counties, This is a Great area for caching for coins!

Bumping this so people can see the addtion of several new summer geotrails in a few states. Hats off to Corfmania for putting together a much more user friendly site than what I had going here!

Also wanted to change one of the requirments for the Armstrong County Geotrail in Pennsylvania. It is now required to complete 20 caches out of 26, not 25 of 30 as it was originally.

I'm working on this geotrail currently and the passport has a small insert of paper that lists this change.

Hello Everyone,

On August 20, 2011 we will launch the Spring Grove Area GeoTrail located in Spring Grove, York County Pennsylvania. The GeoTrail's focus is on the many historical, public and just general points of interest in the Spring Grove Area. We have ordered 250 coins to be redeemed once the cacher finds 14 caches along the trail. More information can be found at SGA GeoTrail

Many thanks to Scarecrowe for starting and maintaining this thread, and to Corfmania for the outstanding list he has created. I enjoy doing the geotrails more than anything else associated with caching. I have been introduced to so many really neat locations while doing the AGT, the EMGT and working on both the Seaway and DCNR trails, and of course the coins are a nice side benefit.

I know that the powers that be here at gc.com were discussing posting a list somewhere, officially sanctioned and maintained, of all geotrails. Does anyone know what every happened to that project? At any rate, this thread should at least get the honor of being pinned to the top of the forum. I was wondering if Scarecrowe has approached an administrator about that possibility. I am sure there are many other cachers who enjoy the geotrails as much as I do and would like having this list readily available.

The Captain John Smith trail is active as of June/July 2011. Not sure about the link to the website, just search for "Captain John Smith Geotrail" on yahoo/google and you will find it. You must get a minimum of 15 caches to get the coin. It is possible to do in a single day if you don't mind the driving. Got my coin and it is great.

Bumping this to the top again, and still hoping that TPTB will eventually put a link to Scaresrowe's list or Corfmania's list (or make one of their own) in the near future. I originally started to look for this list again because a new one has just started in Cattaraugus County, New York - the Amish Geotrail.

Here is a link to the info; I have however tried to bring up some of the caches at gc.com without any success. I emailed the tourist info bureau at Catt County to see if the caches are active yet or not. It looks from the website like they should be, but as mentioned I had no luck finding them on the gc site.Amish Geotrail Cattaraugus County, New York

Also, FYI, I used the link to the Hudson River Geotrail. The site still seems to be up, but the last update was in 2006, and at that time it was still just in the planning stages. I attempted to email the project administrator, but the email address appears to be no good any longer, so I have to presume that the project never materialized.

Incidentally, I just finished the Seaway Geotrail. All of the sections are great, but the St. Lawrence section is not to be missed. Fantastic scenery; great locations. If you start at Tibbets Point in the morning and follow the ten caches along the river ending at Robert Moses State Park, this section can be completed in five to six hours (or start at Robert Moses State Park and end at Tibbets Point).
