Geotrails with Geocoin Rewards

I live in WNY, and there have been a lot of these geocoin geo trails in our surrounding area, and even more coming up (you visit predetermined caches and stamp your passport or whatnot, and you earn a geocoin after your adventures). Recently, after Allegany Geo Bash V, I heard from a cacher of whose coin I had just logged, and he asked me about the AGTs, which we had both completed. Then he asked if I knew of any others. I have been having a lot of fun posting this info on our local geocaching website, on my own Facebook geocaching page, and to this guy who had asked me. But while researching these trails that I did know about, I stumbled across one I didn't know about (probably because I am in New York and this was in Georgia!)

Which led me to wonder what other geocoin geotrails might be out there that I don't know about yet, and would love to share with friends. I try looking it up on Google and Bing, but the majority or responses I get concern the AGTs and the Star Spangled Banner Geotrail. Since I don't seem able to find that info on my own, who better to ask then other geocoin fans?

If you know of one of these trails in your area, or even anywhere else, please post here and share with others, or contact me so I can add it to my list! I KNOW PA/NY/OH/MD/GA can't be the only states to have these. Thanks in advance for any help!

Thats what this thread is here for, to share the info. : )

The ones I have, besides the AGT and the Star Spangled Banner, are:

The Enchanted Mountain Geo Trail,

Long Lake Geocoin Geotrail,

Susquehanna Sojourn,

The Butler-Freeport Historic Trail Geo Trail,

Georgia State Parks Geo Challenge,

Allegheny River Wilderness Island Geo Trail,

and although they aren't published yet, I also have the upcoming Great Lakes Seaway Trail Geo Trail, and the South Western Area Geo Trail (PA)

mlrs1996, I am looking for Geocoin Geotrails. They are a series of caches placed for the purpose of earning a coin/coins. Well, they are placed with the purpose usually of bringing tourisim to an area. For instance THIS thread about the Allegheny Geo Trail (AGTs). 10 counties participated in it. For each county you had to find at least 6 of the participating caches and use the stamp inside to mark your passport (which you could pick up at any of the counties chanber s of commerce or send away for). When you completed a county you could bring your passport in to the office and get a trackable coin for that county. Once all 10 counties were completed the participants were eleigible for an 11th coin. I love my set and my friends and I had so much time traveling back and forth between NY and PA to complete these. Thats another reason I would like to look for more of these trail...they are a lot of fun : )

Great thread. There are actually three in MD:

Delaware had one but apparently they are out of coins.

Is this one still going though? I remember it being announced last year or the year before (if it is the same one I am thinking of). But I can't find any info on this trail anymore, or the caches involved?

The Ohio State Parks has an opportunity to find 18 caches hidden in 18 different Ohio State Parks. The first 100 to get it done get a coin at the end of the summer. It is A LOT of driving, but haven't we all done crazier things for a coin.

We just finished the Star Spangled Banner geo trail and now waiting for the coin.

http://friendsofchesapeakegateways.org/pro...s/ssb_geotrail/

Highly recommended..saw some amazing places!!! 500 miles, one overnighter, and 1 day trip to complete. Found some great eateries too! The Tourism angle works. :)

We did the Maryland Municipal League Geo Trail last year. Another great trip (3 days)

http://www.mdmunicipal.org/programs/geocache.cfm

Between MD and DE they seem to come up with quite a few. FSC (Delaware's First State challenge) netted a pathtag. This was the second year for that. Good caches, good numbers, interesting locations!

Here is another in South Carolina..!

2010 NE OSP Challenge -Portage Lakes GC28QE6

This is one of the parks. When you look at this cache page it tells the other 17 parks and they all start with the title: 2010 NE OSP Challenge- then the park.

Do ya know of anyway to see just the OSP caches on a map of Ohio? I'd be interested in seeing that so I know the general area of these parks. I live in Ohio, so it might be fun. :(

I've accumulated quite a few geocoins at this point, however, the coins that mean the most to me are the ones I had to do caching to earn. There seems to be a growing number of geotrails around the country that have programs in place where, by finding a certain amount of caches or other requirements, you earn a geocoin at the end.

The problem I'm finding is there is no current way to search for these programs. The few that I have found have been mostly by accident. I was hoping to compile a list here for myself and for other cachers to look at when planning extended geocaching trips.

I'm looking for any and all geotrails that have geocoins as rewards upon completion. These can be current or projects in the planning stages. I'm in Pennsylvania so you'll notice the initial batch of geotrails I've found are in my area, so I'm going to rely on other cachers in other parts of the country/world to fill the gaps.

I'll keep this list current based on new info/geotrails I find or anything that gets listed in this thread.

Lincoln City, Oregon's Parks & Recreation Department hosts geocaching events where they will place caches and give out special geocoins.

A few areas around Oregon do similar things: find so many caches and you can get a coin, while they last, from the local Chamber of Commerce:

Canby, OR; Estacada, OR; Molalla, OR; Sherman County, Wasco County, and more that I am unaware of.

Found them, thank you. Adding them in now.

Some photographs would be highly appreciated - the websites usually have only low res pictures.

Butler Freeport Historic GeoTrail

http://www.butlerfreeporttrail.org/

"this is a 20 stage geotrail with a collectable, trackable geocoin available at the end for a donation of $10 to the BFCT."

I'm not sure if this was only available at the event or if the trail exists as a continuing promotion

I'm adding in the Ohio geotrail now. I cannot find an "official" page for it so if someone has it, please let me know.

@forthferalz:

1. The Butler Freeport Historic Geotrail is very much alive and ongoing  The event you are referring to (I think) was a kick off event in May when the trail came out. Also, I know representatives go to area events from time to time and allow people to turn in their passports and receive coins at the events rather than having to go through the mail.

2. Looking through that thread, there are quite a few geotrails listed that are now inactive. If I'm overlooking one listed there I don't have that is active, please let me know so I can add it to the list.

3. What are you referring to when you say add photographs? The coins?

Update: At the moment it is not letting me edit the original post so I'm just going to add the Ohio posting here until I get it straightened out.

Here's a new one in Pa. I just heard about:

DCNR – A “Legacy of Conservation” Geocaching Trail

DCNR.jpg

The exact details are still not known to me, but here's what I've heard so far:

  • 30 caches all within Pa Wilds
  • caches contain collector cards
  • validation sites at some of the State Parks
  • coins will be earned by collecting validated cards

Arkansas State Parks has a Arkansas ParkCache program. Find one cache in each of the 52 state parks, get the numbers for a final which is stocked with ASP coins.

Louisiana is getting really close to releasing a copy of this program.

Thanks for all the info everyone! Seems you can only edit a post within 24 hours, but I'm trying to get that changed so I can put everything at the top. For now, I'm just going to add the new ones from everyone into this post. If I have to, I'll consolidate everything in another post here, just waiting to hear back from a moderator.

I find this interesting, esp. since the DCNR recently imposed a $25 permit fee to place caches in the state parks.

There are/were a few in MI, but most of them now give those little round things instead of a coin. Bummer.

Thanks to a helpful admin, we got a workaround for the editing thing. Give me a little bit to consolidate everything, then I'll post the complete updated list here.

Sorry for the delay, but here is an updated list of geotrails awarding geocoins. Thanks to several fellow cachers and their e-mails and conversations, I've added a few more to the list, including the long awaited Great Lakes Seaway Trail.

This Geotrail will take 6-8 hrs with some route planning and is alot of fun.

The York County, SC History geotrail has just a handful of coins left please call before attempting. We are considering ordering more so it will be active for GeoCoinfest 2011 in Rock Hill, SC

Oh, and that is the link to the Estacada challenge. The 10th Anniversary coin itself says Birthplace of Geocaching on one side next to "City of Estacada, Gateway to the Clackamas" and on the other side says "Oregon's MT. Hood Territory www.mthoodterritory.com"
