Custom POI on Oregon 450

Recommended Posts

I've got two devices - GGPSMap 60CSx and a new Oregon 450.

When I transfer POI's to the 60CSx a new tile called custom POI's appears.

This does not happen on the Oregon.

I also cannot see any custom POI's on my map.

In my advanced map setup the default setting for showing POI's etc is 'Auto'

Any ideas where my POI's are gone and how to make them visible?

On my Oregon 550t, which AFAIK uses the same folder structure as your 450, custom POIs are stored in G:\Garmin\POI (where G: is the drive letter for your unit). I have more than a dozen different POI files in that folder, and they all show up on the maps.

I can search for POIs by selecting "Where To?" then "Extras." I get a list of all the POI files; when I select an item in the list (Cemeteries, for instance), I see a list sorted by distance from my current location.

The display of POIs can be changed by selecting "Setup" then "Map" then "Advanced Map Setup" then "Zoom Levels". I forget whether POI display is included under "Map Points" or "User Waypoints". It's probably the latter, but it's been a while since I've messed with those controls.

My 550t software is 3.61 Beta, and my GPS software is 4.48; YMMV.

Custom POIs visibility is controlled by the User Waypoints zoom level setting. If you have this set to auto you have to zoom into some ridiculously low zoom level to see POIs on the map. I set this to something like 2-3 miles and it works pretty well. You'll need to do this in every profile since the setting is profile specific.

Check under WhereTo?>Extras to verify that they are getting loaded.
