PUBLIC LAND+[GRID SYSTEM]+

I have tried to discuss this in other ways but here goes.Lets begin at the Start,The Louisiana Purchase http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.asp?PID=EH2910. This is the (1.Initial Point) of the Public Land Survey System and the Basis For all Land Descriptions of the Said, Louisiana Purchase. If this is the GRID SYSTEM BASIS for TOWNSHIP'S,SECTION'S AND RANGE'S, 6 MILES by 6 MILES as nearly as can be, why do the maps not show this SYSTEM ????(2.COMPASS)Originaly Surveyed with Compass and then Resurveyed in 1926 with a COMPASS.

Thats correct. Also, a red "+" symbol shown at the intersection of the red lines indicates a section corner that was found at the time of the mapping. While some states do share initial points, most Public Land states have their own initial point, completely unrelated to any of the others. The first Public Land state was Ohio, not Louisiana. All of this, however, is completely unrelated to geodetic surveying, which is a different branch of the surveying profession and serves an entirely different purpose.

So what is the geodetic purpose? It would enhance my finding these little gems, to know why they were placed. Thanks for the info.

Originally, the main purpose of geodetic surveys was mapping. In modern times, engineering design has become an equally important use of the geodetic markers and data. Whereas the Public Land system is a property boundary system, whereby property lines are determined, developed in order to efficiently parcel out the Public Land to individual owners, known as entrymen. It was intended to eliminate the chaos resulting from the absence of any such system in the colonial states. Mathematical connections are sometimes made by surveyors between the two systems for various reasons, and the science known as GIS, Geographic Information Systems, will combine the information from both systems in the future, but the two are separate and distinct in their origins and purposes.

Lets keep this within the frame of the Louisiana Purchase States(THE PUBLIC LAND STATES).The Earliest Geological Surveys were made in support of Agriculture, which was the basic occupation in the U.S. at the time 1800's. http://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/c1050/before.htm The Term Geological refers to the third number in the Mathmatical representation of the Earth the Elevation or Altitude. The 2 numbers for STATE PLANE are,Long. and Latt. 3 in Geodetic Work,Long., Latt. and Elavation. And to try and keep this as clear as possible If you do the Math and Follow these Lines on these maps the math as for 6 mile square as can be Townships does not work out.Lets use one of my caches as an example of this:Roaring River Township SE http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=37588 If you follow the BASE LINE West, by Joseph Brown, you will find 2 more caches at the distance near RANGE 26 times 6 = 156 miles west and The NORTH LINE by PROSPECT K. ROBBINS North LINE, Township 22 times 6 + 132 you will also find 2 caches at this intersection. The Interger Value of Township 22,Range 27,West of the 5th Principal Meridian would then by Law and Land Descriptions would be 132 miles North and 156 miles west.Check the math and the Analysis of the United States Land Surveys. The reasoning in this is I have spent approx. 10 years now working on these Formulae and Calculations, and was hoping that others would find these same conclusions without giving out too much detail.

One time to keep it active, but it looks like no one wants to tackle ths one?????I agree this is a complex issue with a lot of thought process going into the analysis.I guess it is easier for me having all the original map details from the Analysis of the System of United States Land Surveys. This is the Map that refers to the 6 mile Townships,24 mile correction lines,Which are the Standard Paralells and Guide Meridians of the (System).

I have studied the manual to come to these conclusions as well as the GLO Records. If you Begin at (The Initial Point)of the Louisiana Purchase,The Monument,The Fifth Principal Meridian,Range 1,Township 1 and marks stated by the 1st surveyors,Prospect K. Robbins and Joseph Brown.Robbins ran the Northing Line and Brown ran the Base Line West. From this (Initial Point). The Townships then run at 6 mile as square as could be(Retangular System),and correction lines every 24 miles and so on till measured out.

As far as I have been able to decipher, there are those who see some sort of government conspiracy, cover-up or major blunder in the fact that the difference in latitude, from the northern to the southern extents of the Fifth Principal Meridian region, and the difference in longitude, from the eastern to the western extents of same, do not precisely match the theoretical distance in miles that one gets when one adds up the total number of sections or townships in that region, even after correction for curvature of the earth is applied. Efforts to explain that no such relationship can realistically be expected, have thus far proven futile.

No Conspiracy issues here----You have tagged me several times on that point,Although there are errors in the system it is the Legal way to describe Land for whatever purpose. This Was Started By President Thomas Jefferson,Jefferson- Fry Map of Virginia,Then the Louisiana purchase. That was the reason for the Instructions of the Public Land Surveys to follow precise conformities. The Curvature of the Earth is figured into this then and now.Departures from Longitude and Lattitude are still the same. One Foot = 1.0002' survey feet.In the Original Descritions the Long. and Latt. were determined,by Astronomical observations.(This is were the rest of the story begins.Proper Motion of the Stars and Magnetic declination). Then and Now.............
