gpscybr
I double checked mine based on Yogazoo's instructions in his prior post. The areas he has the arrows pointing to on my unit feel solid with no give when gently squeezed and with no squeaks. Either I got a good one or I am not squeezing hard enough. How hard are you guys squeezing LOL?? It's just my humble opinion, but I do not believe that they are designed to be squeezed hard enough to bend the plastic - why would anyone want to do that under normal operations / conditions? I think that if you do squeeze hard you will certainly get a reaction as it is plastic afterall. When I read the posts on this issue, I got the impression the plastic was paper thin thus the bending / squeaking, but does not appear to be the case with my unit. Hopefully this issue will not show up later after I start using it. Quote Link to comment

Are, by and large, cell phones shock proof? Water resistant? NOPE. Can you drop the average cell phone in a stream and still expect it to work? NOPE. Should we expect these basic things from a handheld outdoor use GPS? YES. Quote Link to comment

A GPS unit must be very rugged and it's not acceptable to keep one of these obviously defective "squeakers"; I would return it immediately as well. +Wienerdog
I don’t think you can delete individual caches on the 62s. +AF Bmet
On my old 76csx when I select a puzzle cache for instance I could jog up and edit the puzzle cords to the actual cords and be on my way. +Roarmeister
Yeah, yeah, layered maps...I GET it. I'm talking about completely different MapSource generated maps. The ENTIRE City Navigator North America NA, Garmin US TOPO 2008, custom topo maps, etc. You can only have ONE map file (even layered) active at a time named gmapsupp.img. Can you get to a list ON the 60/76 itself and select from files with ANY name and the .img extension? NO YOU CANNOT. RTFQ, please. Then rename your .img file. I have CNNA, Canadian and US Topo files loaded with different .img files on an 8Gb card + internal memory. Well almost, I am about 1 Gb short of storing everything so I cut some of the Topo segments before loading. Oh wait, my BAD?? I thought that everyone was talking about the 62st (like the header says) instead of the older 60 series. Far be it from me to deviate from the topic at hand! You can't edit or delete a geocache on the unit. The easiest way do this on the 62/78 is this: - Navigate to the geocache (WhereTo?>Geocaches>[select geocache]). Chances are you were doing this already. - If you are on the map page hit MENU>View Geocache and select Show Description. If you are on any other page you can PAGE/QUIT over to Geocaches and do the same thing. - Hit MENU>Save As Waypoint and Ok - You should be looking at a waypoint with the same name as the geocache. Hit MENU>Edit Waypoint, modify the coordinates and hit Go. The drawback is that once you find the cache you'll need to navigate to geocache again and Log Attempt to record your fieldnote. A " durability issue " may take some time to unfold and a squeaking case is not a good way to start. I probably have two dozen Magellan and Garmin GPS units ( a 60 CSx being one ) and I have not had any case issues. I've been waiting to get one of these but I may just wait a bit more as my Nuvi 500 really satisfies my paperless requirements.........I'm really interested in how the 62 performs in the field side by side with a 60 CSx. gpscybr
I thought I did not have a "squeaking/creaking" issue with mine, but after I started using it I can now hear not a squeaking noise, but what sounds like a cracking noise when I squeeze it gently / hold it firmly under both sides of the power button. Maybe the squeaking comes next. What a dissapointment for an expensive GPSR!!! I read in another forum that this squeaking eventually goes away when the case is used for a while - maybe it needs to be "broken in", no pun intended. If not, I'll have a year to go "squeaking" to Garmin for warranty. Either than that, it's a fantastic unit - this is why I am hesitating returning it. P.S. I'm curious to know if this is isolated to the 62s model or is the same for the 62 and 62ST. Edited August 2, 2010 by gpscybr Quote Link to comment

Maybe the squeaking comes next. What a dissapointment for an expensive GPSR!!! Totally! Especially when everyone KNOWS Garmin can make a quality case but, for some reason, chose not to do so this time. My 60CSx is rock solid and I can't recall ever reading any complaints about the case. I've never read about any complaints with the Oregon or Dakota cases, either. You'd think Garmin would have paid closer attention to this after the fiasco with the battery cover/gasket not sealing right on the now defunct Colorados. Quote Link to comment

yogazoo
A nickle for anyone brave enough to open the case and get to the bottom of the squeak issue. What's rubbing? Does it compromise the case's integrity? Is there a home remedy? My best educated guess is that it's a design flaw. Probably not a big deal functionally. Simply an internal "rub" of some poorly fitted plastics. I could be wrong. Remember, a whole shiny nickle! Quote Link to comment

yogazoo
Now that my RMA replacement unit is in the mail I must confess something; I did open the case to take a look and try to identify what was causing the squeaking. What I found that appeared to be causing the noise was two or three plastic "fingers" if you will, that help align the top shell into the bottom shell of the case. The fingers from the top shell extend into the bottom shell. To test this I placed silicone grease on the rubber seal and plastic that contained the seal, so basically I greased anything that might compromise the case integrity or waterproofness. When I put the unit back together it still squeaked. So in my next test I greased the "fingers" and screwed the case back together and the squeaking stopped. Basically it's simply appears to be a design oversight, however not that big of a deal functionally as the case and the seal are tight and do not move when you squeeze the case. It appears to be just the alignment fingers from the top shell that rub the plastic of the inside of the bottom shell. Agreed, it's an annoyance, but that's the extent of it. Sorry I didn't take any photo's but if you really want the squeeking to stop and you don't mind voiding the warranty then you could grease the fingers with a very light touch of high quality silicone grease to abate the squeaks.
