New Garmin 62st

Recommended Posts

I double checked mine based on Yogazoo's instructions in his prior post. The areas he has the arrows pointing to on my unit feel solid with no give when gently squeezed and with no squeaks. Either I got a good one or I am not squeezing hard enough. How hard are you guys squeezing :) LOL??

It's just my humble opinion, but I do not believe that they are designed to be squeezed hard enough to bend the plastic - why would anyone want to do that under normal operations / conditions? I think that if you do squeeze hard you will certainly get a reaction as it is plastic afterall.

When I read the posts on this issue, I got the impression the plastic was paper thin thus the bending / squeaking, but does not appear to be the case with my unit. Hopefully this issue will not show up later after I start using it.

not squeezing hard at all, basically the same force you would use to push the buttons on a phone make mine squeak and creak.l. very very gently squeezing it and/or pushing the power button makes the squeak.

i contacted the seller (gpscentral.ca) and they were very quick to respond and are going to issue me any RMA. fingers crossed the next one is solid! other then the squeak, i am very happy with the unit as well as the Customer Service from GPScentral.ca

If you squeeze your cell phone, you get squeaks too

Yeah, way to compare some of the most disposable personal electronic devices on the market to something that is supposed to be RUGGED...like an outdoor use GPS unit. Are, by and large, cell phones shock proof? Water resistant? NOPE. Can you drop the average cell phone in a stream and still expect it to work? NOPE. Should we expect these basic things from a handheld outdoor use GPS? YES. :P

Agreed - bad comparison. A GPS unit must be very rugged and it's not acceptable to keep one of these obviously defective "squeakers"; I would return it immediately as well.

There's always one in every crowd, isn't there?

Which phone?

G'z One ROCK. I had the previous model but lost it last winter while caching

I work construction and if I didn't have a rugged phone it wouldn't last a month. The phone I lost dropped it into a bucket of paint once. I washed it off in the sink and all was good.

I used my new 62st today after 4 years of using a 60CSx. I like the .gpx download feature so I don't have to deal with a seperate Palm for the cache info. Loading the .gpx files was no problem but my question is: I can't figure how to delete a cache (either found or not) in the 62st. Pretty straight forward with the 60CSx. I'm sure I'm missing something pretty simple. None of the downloaded instruction manuals address this. Any help here?

On my old 76csx when I select a puzzle cache for instance I could jog up and edit the puzzle cords to the actual cords and be on my way. I can't seem to figure out how to do that on the 78s. Is there a way to change the cords of a geocache or waypoint like you could do on the gpsmap 60 or 76?

Yeah, yeah, layered maps...I GET it. I'm talking about completely different MapSource generated maps. The ENTIRE City Navigator North America NA, Garmin US TOPO 2008, custom topo maps, etc. You can only have ONE map file (even layered) active at a time named gmapsupp.img. Can you get to a list ON the 60/76 itself and select from files with ANY name and the .img extension? NO YOU CANNOT. RTFQ, please.

Then rename your .img file. I have CNNA, Canadian and US Topo files loaded with different .img files on an 8Gb card + internal memory. Well almost, I am about 1 Gb short of storing everything so I cut some of the Topo segments before loading.

Oh wait, my BAD?? I thought that everyone was talking about the 62st (like the header says) instead of the older 60 series. Far be it from me to deviate from the topic at hand! :)

You can't edit or delete a geocache on the unit. The easiest way do this on the 62/78 is this:

- Navigate to the geocache (WhereTo?>Geocaches>[select geocache]). Chances are you were doing this already.

- If you are on the map page hit MENU>View Geocache and select Show Description. If you are on any other page you can PAGE/QUIT over to Geocaches and do the same thing.

- Hit MENU>Save As Waypoint and Ok

- You should be looking at a waypoint with the same name as the geocache. Hit MENU>Edit Waypoint, modify the coordinates and hit Go.

The drawback is that once you find the cache you'll need to navigate to geocache again and Log Attempt to record your fieldnote.

I've got a squeaky unit too. I never even noticed until I read this thread and check my receiver.

The question is - does the squeak affect the operation and durability of the unit? Or are people just ticked and think that they automatically have a problem and are running back in panic to Garmin.

I think, I'll just wait this little brohaha out for a while until I see real evidence of a problem. :)

The thing is there is a limit to how long you can keep something and still send it back. A " durability issue " may take some time to unfold and a squeaking case is not a good way to start.

I probably have two dozen Magellan and Garmin GPS units ( a 60 CSx being one ) and I have not had any case issues.

I've been waiting to get one of these but I may just wait a bit more as my Nuvi 500 really satisfies my paperless requirements.........I'm really interested in how the 62 performs in the field side by side with a 60 CSx.

That is exactly what I do. See post #50, last post on the first page where I FIRST asked about this. How about fully READING before jumping into something, hmmm? My beef was that there is NO way to SELECT a separate .img on the unit itself. Capice?

I thought I did not have a "squeaking/creaking" issue with mine, but after I started using it I can now hear not a squeaking noise, but what sounds like a cracking noise when I squeeze it gently / hold it firmly under both sides of the power button. Maybe the squeaking comes next. What a dissapointment for an expensive GPSR!!! :D:D

I read in another forum that this squeaking eventually goes away when the case is used for a while - maybe it needs to be "broken in", no pun intended. If not, I'll have a year to go "squeaking" to Garmin for warranty.

Either than that, it's a fantastic unit - this is why I am hesitating returning it.

P.S. I'm curious to know if this is isolated to the 62s model or is the same for the 62 and 62ST.

Totally! Especially when everyone KNOWS Garmin can make a quality case but, for some reason, chose not to do so this time. My 60CSx is rock solid and I can't recall ever reading any complaints about the case. I've never read about any complaints with the Oregon or Dakota cases, either. You'd think Garmin would have paid closer attention to this after the fiasco with the battery cover/gasket not sealing right on the now defunct Colorados.

Anyone dunked their squeaky 62s in the water to test its waterproof-ness?

My concern with the squeaky case is if water can get in. I bike in all weather and the girls will use the 62s for geocaching (the 60CSx has survived trips in streams, mud, and spagetti... and it is still solid as a rock)

I've contacted Garmin on the subject but have yet to get a reply. I have until the end of this week to return the 62s... I can live with the corrupt tracklog problem I have been having since day 1 but the squeak issue is a bit much to ignore...

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I would be happy to help you with this.

I have went to the site that you gave me (THIS THREAD AND THE WIKI), and there isn't many posting there. Plus I have never heard of this issue before so as long as you aren't bear hugging your GPSMap 62, then please return it back to the unit so you can get a fast return.

If they are unwilling to return the unit, then please contact your Garmin’s Canadian Repair Company for any Warranty needs. You can contact RayTech at: www.RayTech.ca

Please let me know if you have any further questions. Thank you and have a great day!

A nickle for anyone brave enough to open the case and get to the bottom of the squeak issue. What's rubbing? Does it compromise the case's integrity? Is there a home remedy?

My best educated guess is that it's a design flaw. Probably not a big deal functionally. Simply an internal "rub" of some poorly fitted plastics.

I could be wrong. Remember, a whole shiny nickle!

Gee buddy, have you always gone through life with this "chip on your shoulder" "everybody else in the world in a freaking simpleton but me!" attitude. If so, drop it buddy and quit 'er crying in the Forums. Yes I've searched and read your other messages... they all carry the same stink.

Um, thanks for spending/wasting your time? However, I got a real easy fix for ya there, sport. How 'bout simply not reading my messages anymore since they, apparently, get you all hot and bothered for whatever reason? Or put me on yer fancy ignore list, if this forum has that feature... Ain't that hard in the grand scheme of things, really...

Yup, just checked. There's an ignore feature under "My Controls" at the top. USE IT.

I also have a GPSMAP 62squeaker

What about the guys who got a new one - was the second unit without squeaking?

I'll let you know as soon as I get my replacement in the mail.

I am waiting on my replacement as well, should be here next week.

Well my replacement 62s came in the mail today! It does still have a squeak on the side opposite of the power button but I think if I was not looking for it I would not notice it. I will have to give it a few days of use to see if the squeaking develops.

Caches are stored as an enhanced type of POI. And just like POIs, you can't individually delete them, or alter them using the Unit. You should be able to save individual ones as actual waypoints, at which point you can tag them found/unfound, change the coordinates, etc.

here is the 2nd reply i got from garmin when i showed them the youtube video:

Dear Bruce,

As Heath stated below if the unit is not performing or sounding the way you want please return it to the retailer for a exchange. Or you can contact Raytech at the link provided in the previous email.

Now that my RMA replacement unit is in the mail I must confess something; I did open the case to take a look and try to identify what was causing the squeaking. What I found that appeared to be causing the noise was two or three plastic "fingers" if you will, that help align the top shell into the bottom shell of the case. The fingers from the top shell extend into the bottom shell. To test this I placed silicone grease on the rubber seal and plastic that contained the seal, so basically I greased anything that might compromise the case integrity or waterproofness. When I put the unit back together it still squeaked. So in my next test I greased the "fingers" and screwed the case back together and the squeaking stopped.

Basically it's simply appears to be a design oversight, however not that big of a deal functionally as the case and the seal are tight and do not move when you squeeze the case. It appears to be just the alignment fingers from the top shell that rub the plastic of the inside of the bottom shell. Agreed, it's an annoyance, but that's the extent of it.

Sorry I didn't take any photo's but if you really want the squeeking to stop and you don't mind voiding the warranty then you could grease the fingers with a very light touch of high quality silicone grease to abate the squeaks. :anibad:

Wouldn't silicone grease degrade and destroy rubber seals? I read that somewhere...
