10,000 coming up!

I've only logged a handful on here, but I;ve been hunting benchmarks for a few years and have located over 100 of them (not found another few dozen as well).

I suppose I could go hunt up pictures and log entries on here to provide subsequent hunters with first hand information which could come in handy. Maybe I'll start adding them a little at a time as I hunt and log more...

I started keeping track of the count in late June. I check it in the morning when I first get to work, therefore there are no counts from the weekend. Also, I think the count is updated once a day in the afternoon, so I'm really picking it up a day later.

I think we'd be talking about breaking 20 thou if there were an easier way of searching the database. A map layout for example. I think I read that it is being worked on.

Anybody have any updates/rumors/denials regarding this?

While a map layout would help, I don't think it would help us break 20,000 at this point. You still have to go out and find the darn things and sometimes they're not there to be found. Jeremy has mentioned putting in some mapping logic, but I don't have any idea what form it will take.

This is my logic,

Poof! A new cache appears a few days before the Thursday email comes, I punch the lat-long into my Garmin, tear off towards the cache trying to be first.

or

I'm planning a road trip to a somewhat remote location to pick up a few caches that are hidden near each other.

In either case I would love to be able to view a map of the area and quickly ascertain the presence of nearby benchmarks. I know I can download the lat-longs and enter them in mapsource. I think it would be easier if the website had a BM map like the cache map.

I do the front end, but all the database work for getting the benchmarks in the system was Elias' doing. He is currently working on getting the updates in the system. Ultimately we plan to get a direct ftp feed from the NGS so it's pretty darn close to the official database.

Yes, we're working on adding a more comprehensive mapping system, and will have a better way of seeking out those pesky benchmarks.

Perhaps, but I also attribute it to the people that didn't know about the new section. As people have already indicated, the benchmark section doesn't have its own navigation link on the site. The profile pages having the info helped inform folks who were previously unaware of it.

I think this has been mentioned before, you can use an interactive map 'NGS Survey Control Map' to look for benchmarks in your area. However, I'm not sure geocaching.com should do this on the cache mapping page--simply because of the number of benchmarks! In San Mateo, CA there are 78 'stations' in a 5mi x 3mi area. Over 50 of these are 'vertical controls'--i.e., benchmarks.

Jeremy, is there a way to find out who will be logging the 10,000th mark?

Heh. Not really, though I will be able to do it after the fact.
