+BCoveCrew
So I two normal GPS units (an old Magellan 315 and a Delorme PN-40). Recently I got an new smartphone, an HTC Touch Pro II from Verizon. It has a GPS in chip in it. I thought it might be nice to be able to do an occasional cache using my smartphone if I don't happen to have my GPS handy. Can anyone recommend a software package for this purpose? Free is better, but if the price is right, it won't be a big deal. If it helps, I have a premium membership and access to pocket queries. TIA. Quote Link to comment
NordicMan
Isn't it Verizon that is notorious for locking out GPS on most of their phones? Quote Link to comment
+BCoveCrew
Not sure how Verizon is overall, but I think it might be slightly different with the HTC Touch Pro II as noted from this review: Here's a good news/bad news situation. While the Verizon Touch Pro 2 is fitted with a GPS receiver, which is unlocked and will work with applications other than Verizon Navigator, it is slow. The slowest I've handled with it taking in excess of 2 minutes to acquire a satellite fix. It works like a charm with Navigator, but with Google Maps or Live Search it's slow as ketchup in a glass bottle. I did find that if you get a fix through Navigator then switch to the other mapping apps, the GPS was more responsive. I did not experience any lag with the GPS tracking. So I'm hoping that there is still some advice to be had. One other thing this is Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro. Quote Link to comment

TIA. There are a number of good Android apps for geocaching. Search for geocaching in the android market. A few I like: GeoBeagle and GeoHunter are both free and based on same code. GeOrg is not free, but has features I find worth the $7 cost. CacheMate. A few others that I've not used much: Geooh, OpenGPX and Columbus. There's also the app that we're not allowed to discuss and endorse on Groundspeak forums. The Groundspeak app should be out soon. Lots of great choices. Quote Link to comment
+niraD
Except that the HTC Touch Pro II appears to run Windows Mobile® 6.1 Professional, not Android. Quote Link to comment
+New Jersey TJ
Isn't it Verizon that is notorious for locking out GPS on most of their phones? They used to be, but no more, thankfully. The GPS on the TP2 is totally unlocked. Works with any app that can use the GPS. Quote Link to comment

It can do screen scraping which is considered by GS to be in violation of the TOS, so to avoid this you can import your PQ. Then you can get google maps, stalite views, terrain maps etc. Check out the link in my signatur for help. Quote Link to comment
