+TeamTozzo
Hi Everyone! I hid my first cache but hated using the lock and lock. Does anyone have a good source for 50 cal ammo cans? The cheapest I can find them is 25.00 locally, and 8.00 online, but the shipping brings it up to about 20.00 anyway? Thanks everyone, Bill Quote Link to comment
+Prime Suspect
The days of cheap ammo cans are over. They're running about 3x the cost of when I started Geocaching. Quote Link to comment
+Gitchee-Gummee
Everybody wants them, so the price is steadily climbing. You might be surprised by placing a "wanted" ad in your local newspapers' classified section. There are a lot of them hiding in closets and garages. Quote Link to comment
+Ike 13
Army surpluss stores are the best spots to shop for them. If you live anywhere near a base you can find them pretty easily. They have gone up some, and sometimes can be hard to find. If I was rich I'd start a company that manufactured Ammo cans just for geocaching. Shipping may be a little expensive though Quote Link to comment
+Anno Lynke
I got all 3 I have at flea markets the first was $3 the other to I got a few weeks ago for $6 each the guy had a bunch said his son was in the army buying them surpluss by the pallet Quote Link to comment

+Buck&RoundHead
You are better of finding a local military surplus place to drive to, and by them there. You got to realize that when we pull out of Iraq, you will see the market flooded with military surplus. The ammo cans would cost $50 to $70, if they were new. So $20 seems cheap, but $5 each is cheaper if you drive to a local military surplus center. Quote Link to comment
+JustJackMN
If you live in MN or WI, Fleet Farm has them. Quote Link to comment
+TeamMJ2
Military surplus is definitely the way to go. Quote Link to comment
+ekenn028
Yup, military surplus. I found some 7.62 cans for 8 bucks and .50cal for 12 Or if you are like this guy, make friends with the ammo/supply guys and score some free ones. Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
It seems the only way to get them cheap these days is to go to an online military surplus auction and buy a pallet full. Comes to about 2-3 bucks a can when you do this. Of course you need to get the cans home and find a place to store hundreds of ammo cans. You can then keep what you need and sell the rest to the local community at a modest profit. Most people will eagerly pay 4 or 5 bucks a can. I've known some local geocaching associations that have done this. Quote Link to comment
+Mike & Jess
I have noticed in the last couple months the price has shot up on these. You use to be able them up for ~$10 each from some major retail chains. Now they are pushing ~$25+ each. I prefer the ammo cans over the lock & locks, but a decent ammo cache can be pretty expensive to setup these days. Quote Link to comment

+AcousticNut
At my local Army / Navy store they are $7 for a 30 cal can and and $12 for a 50 cal can. Not bad, so as others have said army surplus or army / navy may be your best bet. Quote Link to comment
+geodarts
I checked one surplus store that was selling them for $20. I went to my usual store and they were $9. The owner of the latter store apologized and said that the price had been driven up because people were stockpiling ammo in case the government imposed restrictions. He expected the price to drop again. Quote Link to comment
BlueRajah
They are pretty steep. you still have to pay shipping if you buy them online.. and that kills the prices. Quote Link to comment

+capdude
I've found that they are getting so expensive that they are now disappearing quickly after I've put them out. Out of all the types of caches I've put out, they are the fastest to disappear. Decons are cheaper and water tight. Quote Link to comment

+GrateBear
Here's a link to someone who had some for sale months ago. The person actually posted it twice, but the other time was absolutely blasted by several members because it appeared she joined just to sell them. May be a waste of time as they may all be gone, but if buying several, the cost wasn't too bad. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=236973 Quote Link to comment
+luvmymio
Try a local pawn shop that has a good gun collection. I picked up some .30 cans for around 5 and a couple of .50 cans for 8 Quote Link to comment

They are green (but not the same green) and has writing already printed on it stating that it's an official geocache. Edited July 15, 2010 by capdude Quote Link to comment
