+Homeschoolerz Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Hi I am new to geocaching and loving it. I have an iPhone and love the Groundspeak app but the iPhone battery is not good enough to run that app for long periods. I have an explorist GPS and would like it to be more like the Groundspeak app. It seems to not be set for walking, but more geared to driving. Is there a setting to set that will give u the navigation in a more friendly way for the walker? Thanks in advance for any help! ~Homeschoolerz Quote
+Gitchee-Gummee Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 (edited) In the main menu, there should be a prompt to switch to hiking mode (or something like that). Perhaps it would say ROAD NAV Y/N. Hand-held units are made for hiking more-so than road navigation. Many do both. EDIT: Looking at it on the Magellan website, it appears to have all types of switchable icons, including full paperless capabilities. This thing is MADE for geocaching. +jeffbouldin Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 I started with an Explorist 210 then moved to an Explorist 500. They are great units for starting caching, but you will not get full cache info. You will get Name, GC number, type, coords, date placed, last found date, D\T, and hint. Carry your iPhone for all of the other info and use the eXplorist for the hunt. To set it up correctly, Hit .Menu, hit Preferences, hit map units and make sure the coord system is set to Lat\Lon and map datum is WGS84. This unit doesn't do automobile routing so it should already be set to direct line routing. I don't get on here all of the time so feel free to email me through my profile if you have any other questions. Quote
