Locating cache near trail (?)

Not really, unless the map would show a trail. Even then, you may end up doing a little bit of bushwhacking.

I suppose it would be possible if the "trail" shows up on the map.

Mostly, you are going to have to rely on the cache description. "Near" or "Nearby the trail" means different things to different people.

Yes most bike trails will show up on an aerial photo.. they might disappear under tree cover here and there, but the general track should be evident. If it is a Rails to Trails or old roadbed it will be quite obvious. Find one spot on the trail on a google satellite image use the "Geocaching.com Google Map" link so cache icons will show up as you drag scroll up or down the trail. Hovering the mouse over an icon will give you some data on that cache and you can mark it for further evaluation. There are some bike trails that have so many caches along them that you can trace the trail route by the line of cache icons across the map.
