Snipe33
Anyone still hitting these even though it's private property? They seem to be some of the oldest BM's out there. Come on, admit it....LOL Snipe33 Quote Link to comment
+arrowroot
I found a fistful one afternoon, without it being considered a problem area: Each of the benchmarks were with 100 feet of an intersection, or part of the bridge/underpass. Some were classic brass disks, some were rivets, but all had been recently marked with bright orange paint, making it waaay too easy. These were all in Lake County, IL along CNW tracks. (Truth be told, I'll hunt them wherever and whenever I can. I've found quite a few old chiseled crosses and squares along an active RR near me.) +MountainMudbug
I've found two markers along RR tracks. Although there are a ton in my area, I chose to do these because they were both very near a street intersection and greenway trail runnning parallel about 30 ft downhill from the tracks. I just had to bushwhack uphill and hop across the tracks to snap a pic of the vertical marker in the rockwall face. I never feel comfortable walking along RR tracks even though it is fun, guess I've seen too many movies where they get their feet stuck Quote Link to comment
+KC8JZK
I got stopped by a deputy sheriff because I was on private property( it was posted as such but the sign was a ways up the road). He was good about the whole thing. I didnt find the BM but I only posted a note since I had barely started. Quote Link to comment
+sprocketman927
It seems like most of the BMs around here are along, or close by, RR tracks and count for most of my finds. In most cases, they're easily accessible even if one has to cross a trestle.... Invariably, I always approach from the wrong end.... That white speck on the other side is Snoop513 who wouldn't cross with me. At least one of us had some smarts that day... Snipe33
Oooooooh! I hate those. Crossed one a week ago that had about 50 crossties and that wasn't much fun...especially since there was a road below it about 20' down. BTW that one of yours looks pretty high up...is it? +sprocketman927
Probably around 45-50' high crossing a small creek.... Don't wanna hang around on there too long... "When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world." John Muir Quote Link to comment

+glennaa
Is there a ruling as to how much land on either side of the tracks is RR property? I've never actually seen a "no trespassing" sign or anything. Quote Link to comment

Z15
Railroad right of way can vary greatly. You cannot asssume any distance, it is what it is and is often not uniform along it route. Mike Survey Tech (Retired) Quote Link to comment
