+cactus8
I've found in some of the data sheets mention of recovery[read found] by the US Power Squadron. Who are these guys? Quote Link to comment
+raouljan
These folks have been mentioned before. There is a thread you can search out, but in a nutshell (as I understand it), this is a group of boat owners that recover BMs as a service (perhaps hobby?). I see their reports on BMs out in Arizona... had me going for a while until I saw the thread. I still can't figure out what a boat owner would be doing out here... I think the picture put forward was the Cap'n of Simpson's fame standing over a benchmark... http://www.usps.org/ is their web-page Quote Link to comment
ArtMan
I've noted this too. Google returns http://www.usps.org/ and describes the group as "The world's largest non-profit boating organization, stressing community service." Maybe tracking down survey marks is their idea of community service. Their web site did not come up this afternoon, and I don't know what power boating would have to do with surveying and geodetics, so maybe this is an entirely different group. Quote Link to comment
+rogbarn
From what I understand, they are big on navigation hence their interest in anything related to it, i.e. maps, surveying, etc. Finding benchmarks then comes as a natural extension as a community service. At any rate, they have been doing it for a long time. Quote Link to comment
+Black Dog Trackers
This website shows a direct connection between the boating group and their benchmarking. http://www.usps.org/localusps/anclote/whoweare.html Just wait until THEY find out about US !! Quote Link to comment
+cactus8
I didn't put 2 and 2 together since I thought they were the US Powerboat Squadron and besides why would boaters be looking for BM's in the desert. My first guess was an aviator group. Anyway thanks for the info. Quote Link to comment
