+Harry Dolphin
LY2625 Dang. Tossed the data sheet that I had printed out, that included an 'F' error. But I don't see that now. Oh, well. Set in 1938 in an apple orchard, off Old Mine Road. In the 1960s, the Federal Government bought up to land to create a 27 mile lake at the Tocks Island Dam. The dam and lake were deemed to be unfeasible (as I remember, due to the instability of the rock into which the dam would be set.) And, thus was established the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Basically, most buildings were torn down, and the land reverted to Mother Nature. So, we have a fence line in a 1938 apple orchard, abandoned since the 60s. (Did I mention that I hate Japanese barberry????) I'm pretty sure that I found the rocks that delineated the fence line (though no fence to be found). Plants very wet from yesterday's rain. I found a hole that someone had dug at the coords. (Note: digging is not permitted in NPS areas. Nor are metal detetors.) Very rich, peaty soil for an orchard abandoned in the 60s. Unable to locate either of the refrence marks 'set at ground level'. Did I mention that I do not like unmaintained dirt roads either? The road listed as Ennis Road on the maps is one lane, with grass in the middle that tickled the cachemobile's tummy. Oh, well. It was a fun attempt. Not found since monumented in 1938, and not likely ever to be found. Quote Link to comment
Allison Wunderland
N41 12 07.74590 W074 51 22.66670 LY2625 on your post links to the data sheet. I put the coordinates in Google Earth (using the format here, above). Google Earth went right to it. Nice aerial view of the site. Fence lines seem suggested in the view. I'm always amused by the location descriptions surveyors use from some 80 yrs ago or more: "Start at the stump from the old Spruce and head south along the fence-line until you find a large boulder. Then head toward the site of the old Post Office until you get halfway between the fence and the new roadway . . . Don't mind the dog; he belongs to the Petersens and is friendly once he gets use to you . . . " I'd be curious if Google Earth provides any insights. Quote Link to comment
