GPS donations for scouting?

Recommended Posts

We are going to be setting up an Intro to Geocaching event for our Cub Scouts and families this July. We only have 2 or 3 GPS units with at least 36 people signed up. I have struck out on donations from Cabela's and other outdoor stores, and our Council does not have any. Any suggestions? We are in Plymouth, Minnesota.

Thanks!

Sounds like you're doing a Pack event, so you probably won't get any of the big guys to do it, but is there a local sporting goods/ outdoors store you could invite to participate especially ones who carry BSA uni's & gear. You might find one to come out to set up a display/demo of not only GPS but also tents & gear. Cubbies grow into Boy Scouts who are known to drop a few bucks on stuff now and again :P and most units I've seen around here try to build relationships with the local stores for the personal touch & community bonding...

You might also contact your Council office and see if they might be willing to loan out some units from their NYLT program ... GPS'r is a component of said program.

However, be aware that your council's NYLT program might have mooched from private users and might not have GPS's in inventory.

Where in Minn. are you?

The now merged two councils in the Twin Cities area might be willing to assist, given that they are " better off " than many councils.

You might check into asking local geocachers in your area for help in running the event, borrowing their GPS devices for the duration of the event rather than having them donated permanently. You could probably get some of them to come out and help set up and run the event.
