WOH Posted January 14, 2003 Posted January 14, 2003 Hi all, I am new to this Geocaching and have a question. I was working at one of the San Diego Port District sites and came across a benchmark That read "National Ocean Survey" the id #0136 c I couldnt find it on the site could this be one of those marks that is not listed? Thanks for the help in advanced. Quote
+GEO*Trailblazer 1 Posted January 14, 2003 Posted January 14, 2003 Do a search of all the marks in that zip code area, its bound to show up. When all else fails Geotry again. Quote
Cape Cod Cacher Posted January 14, 2003 Posted January 14, 2003 They are for determining coastlines when making nautical charts. Check around the NOAA site for the full details. http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/ or http://chartmaker.ncd.noaa.gov/staff/charts.htm should get you there. Try the second one. I use alot of charts, so I happened to have it in my favorites. Lucky you, huh? Quote
Z15 Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 many NOS marks are slow to show up in the NGS database. There are several in my area that were set in the 1970's and they are not in there. Depends on the nature of the survey. NOS is part of NOAA Quote
Cape Cod Cacher Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 Bored & curious is a bad combo... Don't hold your breath for a PID or the like, but I found flyby photos of areas near me. Your tax dollars at work! I knew they were there, read the first 2 words... man... Quote
WOH Posted January 20, 2003 Author Posted January 20, 2003 I will keep hunting this one out thanks for all the help. Quote
Z15 Posted January 21, 2003 Posted January 21, 2003 Another thing NOS use's a different numbers scheme for thier marks. for instance the 0136 is probably part of longer number like 909 0136 Look closer at the disk and see if you might have missed some stamped numbers. Also they may be a conflict with the point ID and they changed it slighly in the DB so as not to be confused with another point.
