CAPSLOCK CACHES

Recommended Posts

Most caches descriptions and usernames are written in normal upper/lower mixing of letters.

I have seen a few cachers that have usernames in all caps, their logs are in all caps, names of all their caches are in all caps, and the entire description for each of their caches is in all caps.

I know the internet is infamous FOR PEOPLE WHO FEEL THE NEED TO ALWAYS IM AND EMAIL IN ALL CAPS and I'm sure at least some of these cachers are those kind of people.

But is there a good reason for doing everything in CAPSLOCK? Are some GPS units in the present or past much easier to read if everything is in caps?

Just curious...

I THINK IT IS GREAT THAT SOME PEOPLE USE ALL CAPS. IT IS NEEDED TO KEEP THE WORLD IN BALANCE. THE EXCESSIVE USE OF LOWER CASE LETTERS BUILDS UP A IMBALANCE IN THE TIME/SPACE CONTINUUM. THE ALL CAPS MESSAGES AND CACHE PAGES HELPS TO RELIEVE THIS IMBALANCE.

THE ONLY THING BETTER IS WHEN THEY USE A LOT OF COMMAS,,,,,EXCLAMATION MARKS!!!!!AND OTHER PUNCTUATION MARKS..........

i collect the extras & sell them on ebay. one over-exuberant person can create a severe shortage in his/her area. not a big market for spaces for some reason.

Some people just aren't internet savvy and/or great at typing. I don't think it's something to nitpick - if someone places a cache, they're contributing to the game and they should be encouraged, not discouraged.

Only once have I ever written to a cache owner about the content of a cache page, and it was because there was a very major flaw that made it nearly impossible to find the cache (it was a six-stage multi). I explained why we had trouble and suggested an alternate wording for the problematic sentence, and the owner fixed it right away.

One of the early cachers in the area did that on most of the cache pages! It still drives me nuts. (Great caches, though...)

v3rY sm4[[ tupP3rw4re.

m0r4 th4n 0ne w4y t0 c^che-buT s0me rouTes k|nd4 sk3tchy[bew4r3]..

And that cache is almost nine years old!

AS TO CAP LOCKS... Most of my data entry at work is in all caps. I have to keep remembering to change from cap locks. Oh, well. And, as was said, some peopl don't know how to do it!

What I do find sad are the cachers who hide great caches, but never check the dictionary, or use SpeilcHecquer. Oh, well. You take other cachers as you find them, For better or worse.

I enjoy seeing good speeling, gramamar and punctumatation.

It makes me feel as if my tax money that supports edumacation isn't wasted.

I'm not trying to pick on a specific cacher here, but the most "interesting" use of the keyboard I ever saw was when we were trying to cache in NYC in 2002. I just completely skipped this person's caches, it hurt too much to read the descriptions.

That has got to be on purpose... You could accidentally leave caps lock on, but you couldn't accidentally type a delta instead of an "a"... Now for the real question: why?

Yeah, everything they do, including cache notes and forum posts are this way.

Again, not trying to slam anyone, the differences in people are what make this world interesting. :)

This cacher appears to be still active, and has posted recently in the forums. Maybe they'll pop in and give their perspective. ;)

Hmmm... Could have sworn I said that a few posts back. ;) (But I wasn't mentioning names...)

(Oddly, that cache might still be there! I'm still waiting for them to take the fences down.) (Okay. I've been waiting almost six years... But there's always hope...) I have found two of this cache owner's caches. How to explain? I wouldn't want to start.

I actually enjoyed reading some of those cache descriptions. Despite the fact that that guy was like a pioneer in the art of the micro cache, back in 2001. ;):)

I'm totally blind. :) But, it's quite funny that that's the one that I thought of. ;)

And I did mention a name, but I figured it was written so oddly, no one would figure it out, unless they're from that area (and I'm not trying to get on the person, I think they're creative...just couldn't do the caches).

I think it wouldn't have bothered me so much now. When I saw these cache pages, I had only been caching for 7 months, and I was in a place that I didn't know very well. It was all so new and confusing back then. :D

Maybe they are using an Apple II computer?
I don't think anyone uses those anymore.

Then you think wrong. I have one set up and operating at my house right now. Do a Google (after playing PacMan) for Apple II and you'll find that there is still a strong consumer following of programming on these old machines. There are Apple II forums and there are companies that still sell pieces, parts, and programs for them.

Maybe they are using an Apple II computer? It doesn't have lower case capability. Don't make fun of other people's handiCAPS.

My Apple IIe has that CAPability.

I'm still very fond of it (as far as I know it's still in working condition). Of course, if I need to run anything these days (Karateka!) I use an emulator.

I had an early Apple II+ when they first came out. I seem to remember buying and installing a replacement chip for the thing that gave it mixed-case capability.

Wish I still had that thing; it was a ton of fun in those early days of personal computing.

Cache Ninja! All his caches were written like this. He was one of the earliest cache hiders in the north east. I agree that his pages were a pain to read, but you missed some excellent caches by skipping them.

HOW DO YOU GET THE OTHER CHARACTERS ON YOUR KEYBOARD? DO I NEED TO BUY A NEW KEYBOARD? I ONLY SEE THE UPPER CASE. I SEE THE LOWER CASE ON KEYS LIKE INSERT AND HOME, BUT WHEN I PRESS THEM THEY DON'T ENTER "INSERT" OR "HOME", BUT JUST MESSES UP MY CURSOR POSITION.

That home button never works, I pushed it on my computer at work the other day and nothing happened. I was still sitting there at work wishing I was home.

OK, I NOW RETURN YOU TO YOUR REGULARELY SKEDULED CAPS LOCK THRADE. (because as BrianSnat says, it is usually accompanied by spelling/grammar errors).

I think I used one just a little bit in college. But we used mostly Trash-80's (TRS-80's). I don't believe they had lower case capability either. Someone will verify, or prove me wrong though, I'm sure.

I can't remember but the programming language that most of the early personal computers uses was basic and it used, by convention, all upper case. The first personal computer I used was a Commodore PET but I had used mainframe computers several years before that. The first computer that owned was actually a HP 1000 mini computer that I built from the scrap program at HP and used a Teletype ASR 33 for the terminal and it only used upper case. It was also I loaded the operating system (on paper tape).

The first time I really noticed upper case messages was in the early days of Usenet. One of the early universities to gain access to usenet was Penn State University and the ALL CAPS postings from PSUVM were somewhat notorious. The next rash of all caps postings came primarily from WebTV users.

Would that be the Tandy color basic? Plug it into your TV like a Commodore Vic 20?

Ah the good old days of manually dialing and placing the hand set on the modem.

And getting my but kicked over a massive instate long distance bill.

Oh yeah, some did and some didn't, I can't tell ya if it was a model thing or a release date.
