+DragonsWest Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Curses! My new puzzle is already solved by someone. Now I'll have to come up something even more inexplicable and obtuse. Admittedly, I think some answers are pretty easy and with Certitude the remainder can be guessed. Quote
Andronicus Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Looks like a prety good puzzle to me. There is always some guy willing to spend 2 days non stop without sleep to solve a puzzle. Quote
+DragonsWest Posted May 19, 2010 Author Posted May 19, 2010 Quite a lot of work to put together. I'll not underestimate again the effort of the people who do that sort of thing for a living. I finished it up late last night, but think it looks a bit ugly. I'll clean up the images a bit in the next few days. Already thinking of another theme for a puzzle, but I first have to do some research in PS and Illustrator. Quote
+J the Goat Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 I might actually try to put this one together. It's (kinda) close to me Quote

Admittedly, I think some answers are pretty easy and with Certitude the remainder can be guessed. find a rock bed... a large one... like in an old quarry. put a cache into a fist sized rock, make sure it is wedged in. give the coordinates for the edge of the quarry... give the puzzle out as a physics problem - noting the type of rock and the size (but not the weight)... give your height... post that you threw it off overhand. wish them luck. I'm certain that's been done to death by now. Besides, I'm one of those who will now just leave a Needle In Haystack (NIH) hide. There is fiendish and then there's plain mean. I recently found two evil hides and applaud the hiders' cleverness - a well done evil hide is rewarding to find - a NIH is only relief and a smiley, no applauding. Quote

The other way of making a puzzle cache more difficult (and a method that I prefer) is to make it a multi-level puzzle. It could be a series of puzzles where solving one part will provide information for discovering or info required to solve another part. When all of the puzzles are part of a theme, with a few red herrings thrown it, it can provide a very interesting overall puzzle. I much prefer puzzles like this where the puzzle is inexplicable and obtuse to the point that the challenge is trying to figure out what the CO was thinking about when they created it. Quote

Maybe he means muggled? that would really suck after all that work to get the coords Quote
+DragonsWest Posted May 20, 2010 Author Posted May 20, 2010 Looking at Certitude there have been 10 successful solutions tried. Must be people a bit out of the area, otherwise someone would likely have found it by now. I expect it to have logs soon. There is a nearby puzzle full of red herrings, the trick with some like that is figuring out where to start. Quote

Sounds a lot like Ssptv thats one of my two puzzles, the other one is easier. Quote

Decided it wasn't too horribly difficult, unless you get hung up on selective knowledge (always the unknown variable in these events) the container is also well camo'd. I started it at 3.5, but as I saw the certitude numbers I knocked off half a star. I've written trivia for a pub a couple times and I never know how obscure my trivia will be until I score the sheets - turns out I've a pretty arcane brain, as scoring is usually low (though there are still prizes awarded .) I'm working out another puzzle, no idea how soon it will be done, but should be higher difficulty - again, a visual puzzle. Quote

It's even very clear on how to start, which has the effect of sucking you into the puzzle rather than staring at a cache page just trying to figure our where the puzzle might be or how to even start approaching it. I have, however, seen puzzles which take multiple stages or pieces of an entire puzzle to an extreme. I worked on one for awhile that just became tedious decoding variations on a substitution cipher to decode large blocks of text and another which required solving 12 different fairly easy ciphers to get to the second phase of the puzzle, and had three additional phases which needed to be solved before getting to the final piece. oakenwood Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 The Uncle Rebus puzzle was fun but not very hard, at least for me. Took about half an hour. I certituded it, but I'm not going to Cali any time soon. Quote
