idea for a hide

I have an idea for a hide I wanted to run past the community. Basically I want to make a multi where the first leg is a tunnel that runs through a dam, because its a really cool area and its fun to go through the tunnel, I've done it lots of times just for fun. I was thinking of either using chalk to write the coordinates for the next part (which is about a half mile away, on the same piece of county land) or maybe hiding a film can in there with the coordinates written down on paper. Do you think this would be acceptable for the reviewers?

You would need some rather explicit permission to hide anything in a tunnel like that. Same with chalk.

Even then you would likely have issues with the guidelines centered around this clause:

Caches that deface public or private property, whether a natural or man-made object, in order to provide a hiding place, a clue or a logging method.

Caches placed in areas which are highly sensitive to the extra traffic that would be caused by vehicles and humans (examples may include archaeological or historic sites or cemeteries).

Caches hidden in close proximity to active railroad tracks. In the United States we generally use a distance of 150 ft (46 m) but your local area’s trespassing laws may be different. All local laws apply.

Caches near or on military installations.

Caches near, on or under public structures deemed potential or possible targets for terrorist attacks. These may include but are not limited to highway bridges, dams, government buildings, elementary and secondary schools, and airports.

Would the public have good permission to be there?? Obviously the GPS would not work in the tunnel so you would have to do some kind of offset.

If it is ok to go through the tunnell - it might be better to do a multi that leads finders through the tunnel at some point without actually trying to hide anything there.

Seems like a rather rough sketch of an idea, but right off the top of my head, I could see some issues with the following:

Basically I want to make a multi where the first leg is a tunnel that runs through a dam...

From the Guidelines:

Caches may be quickly archived if we see the following (which is not exhaustive):

I'm not saying that it's impossible to get it Published, but just pointing out one interpretation you might want to consider so that you can include additional information in a Note to the Reviewer. Generally speaking, I've found that the more information you include in a Note ahead of time, the faster the Listing gets Published.

Ya I saw that, which is why I figured id ask here, especially about the chalk. I guess my thinking is it would wash off easy if need be. What the tunnel actually does is provide an area for excess water to go from a lake that is fed by a small creek. So the area facing the is an open area that goes 20 feet or so straight down, a person with the right equipment could repel or something haha and the other side is a tunnel sticking out of the dam about 4 feet off the surface of a creek. I was thinking of placing the coordinates for the are in the front of the dam and then having a hint with the altimeter. Its pretty easy to figure out how they would get in there, just figure out where the water goes :)

But ya I will have to do more research and figure out who actually has the athourity to grant that sort of request. Thanks for the input!

Yes, you would think that would be the case. We had a similar Listing a few years ago in which a Stage was written on a public phone booth with a washable marker. It almost immediately had critical log entries from folks concerned about the perception of defacement. It was Archived after a short and tumultuous life.

Generally speaking, the Geocaching Community takes a very high moral road compared with other sports I'm involved with. Some of this probably has evolved over time due to some adverse reactions from Land Owners/Managers.

All the same, sounds like a very novel idea. I hope things work out for you :)

Is the tunnel normally legally open for public access?
Well, it's on county land, and there are no signs, grates, or anything really that would prevent someone from accessing it. As for the dam, people walk across it a lot as its just another part of the shore line really, and it gets mowed a few times a year. (its an earthen dam.) I suppose that's still a bit iffy though? :-/

Just because people do it doesn't mean it's legal. Just remember when you put a cache up there that traffic might increase and will probably increase off the "trail" area as well which might incite some issues.

I would say you need to start at the very least getting permission to use the general area.

you could have the multi with one part is near the entrance of the tunnel one side and the other is near the tunnel entrance the opposits side.

therby making people travel the route you want but not having the cointainer infridge the guidlines by being to close to the dam,

you could do it as 2 traditional, (caches either side of the tunnel) with a bonus (located at the chosen area 1/2 mile away)

this way people get 3 smiles as well as the tunnle walk that your trying for,

You should find out who the land manager is and ask them.

It would probably not pass review if you hide a container inside. Any graffiti would also be against the guidelines.

Is there anything inside that can be counted? Seams in concrete? Light fixtures? If so you can create a virtual stage inside and use the numbers obtained from inside the tunnel to point to the next or final stage.

There is a bit of metal structure stuff, and there are seams! I didn't think of that, that would be really cool to do a puzzle based on that! I'd have to do some weird math maybe though to keep it away from the other caches in the area, in the park, and not in the middle of the lake though I would think haha. I'll look into it for sure!

Just to clarify - this is not a walking or driving type tunnel?? But rather a conduit for water under certain conditions??
