+bystox
B&K&A and I decided to look for a benchmark DU1755 today which would have been the first for both of us. The area had been graded but about 8 feet from the coodinates we found a flat metal broken disk. Not really knowing what we were looking for we wondered if this might be the remnants of the benchmark. We also thought it could be a sprinkler head but there was no grass (nor is it likely there ever was) anywhere near here. Here are pictures. Any ideas? Quote Link to comment
+Black Dog Trackers
DU1755 is "location is SCALED", so forget the coordinates, they could be a couple hundred feet off. For a scaled location benchmark you MUST use the verbal description to find the mark. What you have pictured isn't a survey mark as far as I know. Check the geocaching site's benchmark gallery to see a good range of what the disks look like. Quote Link to comment
+B&K&A
Thanks Black Dog. We were highly suspicious of what we had in those pictures. However, the deep line in the face of the disk (as pictured in picture #2) do seem similar to some of the pictures of disks in that gallery. We were unable to follow the written directions do to changes in the area. The canal road is no longer traversable and a new freeway runs between the starting and ending points of the written directions. We may revisit this one to see if it is further off the coordinates than we were looking. Otherwise, there are sure a bunch more to hunt for!! Thanks again! Agent_K
Looks like a locking gas cap to me. "Ich erhielt zwei Drehscheiben und ein Mikrophon" Quote Link to comment
+happycycler
Those SCALED ones are tough -- especially where the description does not give some meaningful measurements that intersect! (5.85 MI, 15.3 FT. SOUTH and 125.0 FT. SOUTH does not give you a lot to work with -- in my opinion.) I have several frowny faces for SCALED benchmarks with very similar descriptions -- along different canals. The ADJUSTED locations will be somewhat easier to locate with your handheld GPS. And of course when a witness post survives, that can be very helpful. Good luck! Quote Link to comment
