+happycycler
Yesterday I unsuccessfully searched for JD2522 -- COLUMBIA RAD RNG MCEN OF 5. I did not find it and have logged a NOT FOUND. But my question is: Is Radio Range still used for aerial navigation in the U.S.? Quote Link to comment
+jeff35080
RAdio Detection And Ranging Yep... radar aka radio detection and ranging is still used Seriously though... I don't really know if this old type of navigation is still used. Happy benchmarking Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com If you hide it, they will come.... Dutchduane
Nope. Radio ranges came into general use just prior to World War II. The last of them were phased out in the mid 1970s. Most of the towers have been removed. Ocasionally the center tower was left and was used for a radio non-directional beacon or homing beacon. Quote Link to comment
+jeff35080
Interesting Dutchduane.... now that you mention this... I seem to recall seeing something on the History Channel... or maybe I'm just imagining this since I have been up for almost 24 hours straight Cheers! +happycycler
Thank you Dutchduane for the info. I had hopes that someone here would know the answer that I sought. The most recent find was NGS (GOOD) 1963 which makes sense in light of your answer. Thanks jeff35080 too -- at least you responded. I also had some vague feeling of having seen.heard something about that form of navigation being superceded. Oh and BTW I thought that RADAR ws still being used somewhere. Quote Link to comment

I use it just about every day for traffic enforcement Happy benchmarking! Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com If you hide it, they will come.... Quote Link to comment
Dutchduane
I have found the site of an old radio range station near the Bellingham, Washington airport, and hope to place a cache there soon. My other main hobby is aviation history. Perhaps a thread on radio ranges and airway beacons (another very early aviation navigation system) would be appropriate? anyone interested let me know. +happycycler
Dutchduane -- there have been some threads on Airway Beacons earlier. I found two by going back to pages 3 & 4: Airway_beacons and more Airway_beacons On the radar use? Does that mean I would be in danger of getting a *TOO SLOW* ticket if I benchmark in Alabama? Nope... not at all It means I could arrange for an escort for you or it could mean that I could get you to bring your mountain bike and we could both go hit the trails Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com If you hide it, they will come....
