+zoltig
Went out to find http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.asp?PID=LL1080 and also found a blank BM set in bridge. No markings except for what was cast in place. Thoughts?? Has this happened before? Quote Link to comment
+wolf452
In Wisconsin the DOT requires disks in new bridges, but doesn't always stamp them. Could be that type. Quote Link to comment
Z15
No telling what happened but maybe there is future highway work pending that will destroy the mark set in the rock? I have found 2, a (unknown year) USC&GS and a 1985 NGS BM in Michigan with no stamping on them. One had a designation (name) and the other was a reset disk that had no information available anywhere. I suppose it could be. It was mid-span in the bridge which would allow horizontal flex though. When I think back on this, it may be a box culvert. No biggy!! Quote Link to comment
+user13371
Found a blank one myself today. NE0426 Has the usual engravings around the edge but is not stamped with the station name or altitude. --- LDR. Quote Link to comment
survey tech
Blank ones are not terribly uncommon. In some cases, one crew sets the markers and another crew stamps them later, sometimes only after the data gathered by the first crew has been processed and verified to be correct. The procedure varies from one project to another. Quote Link to comment
Z15
I ran into a recon team setting vertical control in 1996. One tech and a college intern with a utility truck (they were a week or two ahead of the level party) and were recovering and setting marks. The recon team was stamping and describing the marks. They had a photo-copy of a USGS quad map with the existing marks and new marks located. Said they were looking for a least 3 existing marks to come off of for their level lines to harbors of refuge and USCG CORS sites on the Great Lakes. The level party consisted on 2 interns, 2 techs, 1 suburban and 2 motorbikes for the rod persons. Quote Link to comment
