+jeff35080
First of all, I am not a tree-hugger. With that said, is surveying tape biodegradable? As I become more interested in scouting-out benchmarks, I find myself noticing survey tape everywhere and some of it seems to be very old. I was just curious if it was deemed 'enviromentally friendly'. Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com If you hide it, they will come.... Quote Link to comment
Wild T2
They make both biodegradable and photodegradable flagging but I doubt that many surveyors use it since it is more expensive than the regular type. The “degradable” types are supposed to last 6 months to a year. Another problem is that some of the dyes used to color the vinyl were found to be toxic if eaten by livestock or wildlife. The problem was discovered quite a few years ago, and I believe that the current stuff is now a lot safer. Quote Link to comment
Z15
For the most part, a surveyor would not want the flagging (tape as you call it) to degrade. Want it last to warn or alert everyone of the presence of a valuable survey marker or property line etc. Quote Link to comment
+jeff35080
Thanks for the info I find myself constantly spotting this stuff, now that I know what I'm looking for as I have found several benchmarks just by observing the vividly colored ribbons hanging from tree limbs I just can't help but imagining the nests of birds built entirely of this material Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com If you hide it, they will come.... +GEO*Trailblazer 1
What about the ruts left by the Forest Service Survey crew in our Glade Chutes a protected area,by their 4-wheelers. This has caused a major erosion problem in that area now.I do not get it, They can we can't,I must have lost a few more brain cells in the 60's than I thought. A GPSr and a Cache will never harm the enviroment that bad.I have found survey tape at least 15 years old. In the mounds of stones done by the Forest Service in 1959.And variuos other examples of poor habits by people not interested in the Enviroment. On both sides of the Fence. But that is the reason that we now have this forum to discuss and document these things that we observe. If you are interested in the Field work part of this I would suggest a FIELD Notebook to log all the things that you find that are of major importance. The original Field notes from the original survey's is sometimes the only documented evidence of a points existance. When all else fails Geotry again. Quote Link to comment
